Studycat Launches Language Learning Lab Amid Global ESL Initiatives

New programs empower children and newcomers with transformative language education and community integration.

On March 11, 2025, Studycat, a leading provider of children's early language learning applications, announced its partnership with the Water and Health Foundation (WAH) to establish the Language Learning Lab at Kumrou Krong Primary School, located in Kampong Chhnang, Cambodia. This initiative aims to provide children from underserved communities with access to high-quality language education through innovative technology.

The Language Learning Lab, funded by The Atlas Foundation and The Anita, Alex, and Annabel Nicholson Memorial Fund, is part of Studycat's commitment to make language learning more accessible globally. The program was officially launched from February 21 to February 25, 2025, during which Studycat Co-Founder Mateo Solares and Head of Learning Jake Whiddon visited the school to oversee the setup.

Equipped with 25 tablets, a full English curriculum, and an interactive whiteboard, the newly furnished classroom is set to revolutionize the way language education is delivered at this primary school. "For many children from underserved families, even basic necessities like school supplies and clothing are out of reach, creating barriers to their education. Learning a new language—whether English or Chinese—can be a game-changer, opening doors to opportunities and a brighter future," said Philip Kitcher, CEO of WAH Foundation.

With the primary focus on teaching English, the Language Learning Lab is poised to empower hundreds of children. The program features twice-weekly lessons to give students consistent exposure to the English language, with plans to expand to additional languages as the program develops. The launch included demonstrations for parents and students, training for teachers, and sample lessons from Studycat's team.

"The program is managed by Chantha Sous, the new lead educator at Kumrou Krong, alongside Principal Mr. Angkea, whose vision is pivotal for enhancing the future of students at the school. This initiative not only aims to provide educational resources but also fosters community engagement," explained Kitcher.

Meanwhile, across the globe, Great Plains College in Kindersley announced an extension of its free English as a Second Language (ESL) conversation classes, now available from May to mid-June 2025, careful to cater to newcomers aiming to integrate effectively within the community. Initially scheduled to end this March, the college saw the need for extended programming due to the positive reception and outcomes of the classes.

Candace Besharah, who instructs the ESL classes, emphasized the importance of practical conversation training. "Primarily what we work on is the pillars of language. We practice skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. But mostly, it's for conversational purposes."
"They are free, evening classes, and if timing is inconvenient, other online options are available," she added, emphasizing the program's accessibility to participants, which includes permanent residents and temporary work permit holders.

The diverse student body reflects the program's reach, attracting individuals from countries such as the Philippines, Ukraine, Egypt, Vietnam, Peru, Taiwan, and Uganda. Besharah highlighted how imperative this program is to help newcomers acclimate to their new surroundings: "Learning a new language can be isolative and lonely. I think we are providing a safe place for not only learning the language but also fostering friendships and community involvement."

To facilitate integration, broader community engagement plays a significant role within the program's structure, with activities ranging from museum visits, to sessions at the district library, and local sports events. According to Besharah, such engagements are integral: "We've just been very fortunate to be part of the community."
For anyone interested, registration for the remaining ESL classes can be done by contacting Bula at [email protected] or via phone at 306-778-5477.

The collaborative efforts from Studycat, WAH Foundation, and Great Plains College reveal the significant steps being taken to address the educational needs of children and newcomers alike. These initiatives highlight the importance of language training as both an educational and societal necessity, aiming not only to enrich individual lives but also to strengthen the fabric of communities.
