Strikes Set To Disrupt Train Services Across Italy

Passengers advised to check schedules and refunds as strikes loom on March 19 and March 22.

Italy's train system is gearing up for significant disruptions as unions announce national and company strikes scheduled for March 19 and March 22, 2025. On March 19, from 9:01 AM to 4:59 PM, employees of the FS Group, which includes Trenitalia, Trenitalia Tper, and Trenord, will participate in a national strike. This labor action is likely to lead to numerous train cancellations and variations across the country.

According to Trenitalia, "the agitation will cause modifications to the service even before the start and after its conclusion." This means passengers may experience changes not just during the strike hours but also immediately before and after. For travelers planning to use train services on this day, it’s advised to stay informed about any last-minute protocols.

Customers who opt to cancel their trips can seek refunds up until the departure time for Intercity and Frecce trains. For Regional trains, refunds can be requested until midnight on March 18, 2025, the day before the strike begins. Alternatively, passengers have the option to reschedule their journeys, subject to available seating.

The strike's impact could be felt particularly hard during peak travel hours, creating complications for those commuting for work or leisure during this period. Passengers can access real-time updates and service information via the Trenitalia app, the Infomobilità section of the Trenitalia website (trenitalia.com), and through customer service hotlines, including the free number 800 89 20 21. Assistance is also available at ticket counters.

Compounding the situation, the Orsa union has announced another strike at EAV, which operates regional transport, scheduled for March 22, 2025. This four-hour strike will occur from 7:40 PM to 11:40 PM, primarily driven by organizational challenges within the company.

Before the EAV strike, the last guaranteed train departures from Naples include Sorrento at 7:29 PM and Poggiomarino at 7:38 PM. Additional last services will depart from Sarno at 7:34 PM and Torre Annunziata at 7:38 PM on train 4197 for Poggiomarino. From S. Giorgio, the last guaranteed train to Baiano will leave at 7:30 PM.

For travelers heading to Naples, the final departures before the strike's commencement will include Sorrento at 7:38 PM, Poggiomarino at 7:06 PM, Sarno at 7:14 PM, and Torre Annunziata at 7:32 PM on train 4190 from Poggiomarino. The last service from Baiano to Naples is set for 7:39 PM.

During the strike, the operation of trains will primarily depend on how many workers participate. This variability could lead to uncertain travel plans for passengers relying on EAV services during this timeframe.

Passengers affected by both strikes are encouraged to prepare accordingly. Checking current train schedules and staying updated via official sources can mitigate the impact these strikes will have on travel plans. For any inquiries about the adjustments and services, customers can expect responsive support from Trenitalia and EAV personnel, ensuring minimal confusion during these labor actions.

These planned strikes highlight the pressing issues facing transportation workers across Italy, reflecting broader discussions about labor rights and organizational challenges within public transport services. Commuters are urged to remain informed and proactive as the dates approach, ensuring their travel arrangements reflect the latest available information.
