Strategies Diverge As Trump And Harris Fight For Votes

The 2024 election campaign is highlighting contrasting methods as Kamala Harris targets women’s issues against Trump’s focus on race and masculinity

The buildup to the 2024 U.S. presidential election is shaping up to be a battleground of contrasting campaign strategies, particularly between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. This campaign is not just about policies or rhetoric but also about manipulating the narrative surrounding sensitive social issues, like race relations and abortion rights.

Donald Trump's approach remains controversial and deeply rooted in the politics of division. His campaign strategy leans heavily on racial and ethnic tensions, which, according to Thomas B. Edsall of the New York Times, is fundamental to his appeal among the Republican base. Trump's need to amplify racial grievances seems to resonate with segments of white voters who feel marginalized by demographic changes. He famously stated, "There is a definite anti-white feeling in this country and it can't be allowed." This sentiment reflects his calculated targeting of voters who believe they are being unfairly treated as racial dynamics shift. His method taps directly from the well of racial grievance politics, fanning the flames of fear concerning growing minority populations.

The backdrop of Trump's 2024 campaign is inseparable from his historical utilization of racially charged media narratives to galvanize support. According to political scientists John Sides, Michael Tesler, and Lynn Vavreck, Trump's rise to political prominence began with his ability to exploit white grievance—essentially acting as the voice for whites feeling pushed aside by America's increasing diversity. They contend, "Trump was distinctive in how he tapped white grievance. His primary campaign became a vehicle for identity politics" focusing on fears of displacement.

The latest strategies from Trump's camp demonstrate little deviation from this path. Notably, he is engaged actively with masculinity-driven segments of the electorate, promoting narratives of strength and safety. Whether it be by targeting the “bro vote” through subcultural reference points online or by adopting combative stances on immigration, his positioning seeks to resonate with men. His recent remarks positioned him as the protector under his presidency, declaring, "You will be protected, and I will be your protector."

On the other hand, Vice President Kamala Harris is taking on the election with distinctly different tactics. Recognizing the growing gender gap—where women seem to favor her candidate's vision over Trump's—Harris is tailoring her campaign around women's reproductive rights, particularly highlighting the ramifications following the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The Harris campaign is capitalizing on the public's heightened awareness around abortion rights with targeted ads depicting personal stories. One such ad features Hadley Duvall, who recounts the devastating consequences of Trump’s policies on women facing pregnancy due to assault: "Donald Trump did this. He took away our freedom," she asserts passionately.

Polling data supports Harris's approach, showing her leading among women voters. A New York Times/Siena College poll revealed her holding 56% support compared to Trump's 40% among female likely voters. The stark difference is even more pronounced within swing states. Harris is also actively building rapport with Black men, aiming to counteract the usual Republican dominance among male voters by emphasizing earned respect and shared interests.

"Women are voting more for her than men for Trump," shares Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster. She notes this dynamic indicates significant power shifts as women are more likely to turn out than men, which could be pivotal for Harris as she rallies support. While Trump digs deep trenches of divisive narratives, Harris is attempting to extend her hand across the aisle—inviting Republican former officials to stand with her, symbolizing unity and bipartisanship. This includes her event featuring former Republican representatives like Adam Kinzinger and Barbara Comstock, who have openly distanced themselves from Trump.

While Harris seems focused on bringing issues like reproductive freedom to the forefront, Trump's campaign strategy appears fixated on economic discontent, attempting to stir fears surrounding immigration and crime—methods historically effective for him. This dichotomy between Trump and Harris highlights how both campaigns aim to capitalize on different voter motivations, with Harris leaning toward inclusivity and social equity, and Trump resolutely enforcing traditional conservative narratives.

Interestingly, some demographic groups are increasingly finding common ground with Harris, particularly suburban women who historically leaned Republican. During reelections, many have expressed disillusionment with Trump's attitudes toward women’s rights. A series of interviews conducted with Republican women revealed shifting views; many now support measures aimed at preserving abortion rights, indicating how Harris’s platform aligns closer with their values.

This shifting tide may serve as the undercurrent of the 2024 elections. For Harris, it’s about framing her narrative around empowerment and safety for women and families, hoping to resonate more deeply than Trump's raw appeals to fear and division. The rhetoric continues to take center stage, but the key will be which candidate can effectively mobilize their base to turn out on Election Day. If Harris can keep persuading women and moderates by painting Trump as out of touch on fundamental rights, she stands to benefit significantly.

But is this gender gap real enough to change the electoral map? With early voting already underway and the state of the economy weighing heavily on minds, both candidates must maintain laser-focus on their audience’s concerns—whether it be economic stability, safety, health care, or preserving civil liberties. The election is rapidly approaching and the race is pitting deeply entrenched viewpoints against one another, making for one of the more contentious political stories of the year.
