Storm Warning Issued For Cologne As Weather Takes Dangerous Turn

A severe change from mild temperatures to dangerous storm conditions is expected across NRW as winds pick up significantly.

A severe storm warning has been issued for Cologne and North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) as shifting weather conditions bring significant changes. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the region is bracing for strong winds, rain, and the possibility of snow, starting from Monday, January 6, 2025. The week begins with mild temperatures, but residents are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather.

On Monday, locals can expect temperatures to reach around 15 degrees Celsius, thanks to warm air from the British Isles. This warmth, unfortunately, will be short-lived, as a cold front is expected to sweep through by midday, leading to increased wind speeds and severe weather conditions. A weather expert noted, "The conditions look really severe. It's going to be quite wild,” referring to the incoming storm.

The DWD has issued warnings for strong gusts of wind, forecasting speeds of up to 80 km/h across the region, and even up to 100 km/h at higher altitudes. Residents have been urged to avoid forest areas, parks, cemeteries, and avenues where falling trees and breaking branches may pose dangers. The City of Cologne has also suggested the possibility of closing public green spaces and facilities for safety reasons if conditions worsen.

Reports indicate the storm will intensify as the day progresses, particularly impacting the areas of Eifel and west of the Rhine. Initial gusts were already recorded early Monday morning, and the winds are expected to reach their peak around the afternoon, when the cold front arrives, resulting in wind gusts of as much as 100 km/h. Areas at higher elevations could even see wind speeds classified as hurricane-force, exceeding 110 km/h.

Municipalities such as Brühl and Kerpen have already taken precautionary measures. The city of Brühl announced the closure of Schlosspark until it can be deemed safe for visitors. Meanwhile, the city of Kerpen has closed its cemeteries, with the exception of two, to minimize risk.

Travel disruptions are also anticipated due to the storm conditions. The A560 highway saw temporary closures due to debris on the road, and delays were reported on the A1 highway as well. Vehicles traveling through affected areas have been warned to exercise caution.

The DWD's predictions include not just strong winds but also potential snowfall later as the storm subsides. By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, ranging from 4 to 7 degrees, and with higher altitudes potentially witnessing snow showers. Weather conditions will remain unstable throughout the week, with precipitation expected to continue.

With the weekend leading up to this tumultuous weather, residents are advised to prepare for possible emergencies, as both forest areas and urban park facilities may see closures during the height of the storm. While schools and businesses remain open, the authorities have cautioned everyone to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during peak storm hours.

Looking beyond Monday, the weather is expected to remain unsettled. Tuesday will see cooler temperatures and some rain, with chances of sunlight returning only to dissipate as the week progresses. Incidentally, temperatures could drop to as low as -3 degrees Celsius overnight, resulting in icy conditions on roads and sidewalks.

Overall, the weather forecast indicates a turbulent week for Cologne and NRW, making it imperative for residents to stay informed through reliable weather updates. Photos and videos of storm impacts are welcomed from locals, who are encouraged to share their experiences online.

With safety as the top priority, both the DWD and local authorities will continue to monitor the situation closely, updating the public on changes to the storm's path and intensity.
