Stellantis Recalls 68,000 Vehicles Over Engine Risks

Major recall affects Citroën, Peugeot, and Opel models manufactured between 2022 and 2024 due to engine safety concerns.

Stellantis has announced the recall of 68,000 vehicles across France, due to issues related to the 1.2 PureTech engine, particularly focusing on the oil jet cooling nozzle. This significant recall, which impacts multiple models, aims to address potential risks associated with engine failures and even fires.

According to reports from La Provence, the recall concerns 57,000 Citroën C3 models, 2,500 Peugeot 208 vehicles, and approximately 8,700 Opel Corsa units, all manufactured between 2022 and 2024. These cars, equipped with the atmospheric version of the 1.2 PureTech engine, have been identified to possess potentially defective oil jet cooling nozzles, which could degrade prematurely and pose severe risks.

Stellantis explained the technical issue, saying, "It is about the oil jet cooling nozzle. This nozzle can face premature degradation. The internal parts of the nozzle can reach the crankshaft." This component is pivotal for the engine's operation, as it converts piston movement to rotational movement. The malfunction of this part could lead to severe mechanical failure, including the risk of engine block damage, which could manifest as unusual knocking noises or loss of power.

Safety concerns escalate as the potential for oil leakage, particularly onto hot exhaust components, raises alarms about fire hazards. Stellantis cautioned, "If oil leaks onto the exhaust line, it cannot be ruled out, and there may be a fire in the engine compartment." Such statements underline the gravity of the situation, prompting the company to initiate this recall action to mitigate any threats posed to drivers and passengers.

Stellantis committed to offering free repairs to affected owners. The intervention involves replacing the faulty oil jet cooling nozzle, carrying out an oil change, and installing new oil using the 5W30 FPW9.55535/03 Quartz Ineo RCP oil. This repair process is expected to take about 30 minutes.

Customers can expect to receive notifications by mail informing them of the necessary repairs. Meanwhile, they can also proactively check if their vehicle is part of the recall by entering their VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the official websites of Citroën, Peugeot, and Opel. Stellantis has designated codes for this recall: NS8 for Citroën, MV2 for Peugeot, and KQ9 for Opel, making it easier for owners to determine if their vehicle requires servicing.

The 1.2 PureTech engine has established its reputation over the years, initially receiving positive reviews. Yet this latest defect could potentially tarnish Stellantis' reputation, particularly as they are already managing past recall issues related to airbags and other components. Still, the company emphasized this problem arises from production flaws by certain suppliers rather than the engine's overall design.

Stellantis is tasked with regaining consumer trust and ensuring safety remains its top priority. With this recall, the automotive giant aims to demonstrate its commitment to quality and consumer safety, addressing immediate concerns for thousands of car owners.

This recall not only reflects the importance of maintaining manufacturing standards to avoid future complications but also the potential impact on consumer confidence as they navigate the automotive market. The scrutiny under which Stellantis finds itself serves as a reminder of the high stakes involved when manufacturing modern vehicles.
