Stefan Raab Partners With Bully Herbig For RTL Comeback

The iconic entertainer returns with fresh support and new challenges as competition heats up on German television.

Stefan Raab and Bully Herbig are set to revitalize entertainment on RTL with their new show, "Stefan und Bully gegen irgendson Schnulli," premiering December 21 at 8:15 PM. Raab, who previously bowed out of the spotlight nine years ago, is eager to reclaim his status as one of Germany’s foremost TV entertainers.

Raab, now 58, has had his share of ups and downs since he retreated from the television stage after years of creating successful formats and pulling millions of viewers back to their screens. His recent TV comeback was met with lukewarm reception, prompting him to acknowledge, "Vielleicht habe ich ein bisschen an Spritzigkeit verloren" (Perhaps I've lost some of my zest), as he spoke candidly about the challenges of producing content solo.

Upon reflecting on his initial return efforts, which included facing off against boxing champion Regina Halmich, Raab realized he could use some support—enter Bully Herbig. The two will partner to navigate the stage in Raab’s new live format, which involves competing against non-celebrity contestants across twelve engaging game rounds. The show intends to tap back to the roots of the entertaining and fun-filled programs viewers once adored.

Former colleagues have weighed in on Raab's new venture with mixed reviews. Micky Beisenherz, another known comedian, expressed skepticism about Raab's ability to enact the humor for which he once became famous, illustrating how the expectations surrounding Raab's performances have shifted over the years. Meanwhile, audiences remain divided on his attempts to replicate the success of iconic shows like "TV Total," with some claiming the dynamics are lacking compared to the past.

The format will be hosted by longtime friend and former intern Elton, who brings his own flair to the production. Commentator Frank "Buschi" Buschmann will provide live reactions of the action, ensuring the audience remains entertained throughout the energetic competition.

The show’s concept is crafted with nostalgia, aiming to merge Raab's longstanding antics with Bully's unique comedic style, which many hope will breathe new life and laughter back onto the TV screen. Raab himself recognizes the necessity of collaboration, stating, "Man müsste sich mit Bully ideal ergänzen und aufeinander verlassen können" (One must complement each other ideally and be able to rely on one another). This candid admission shows Raab's evolution as he embraces his well-earned wisdom.

Despite initial turmoil surrounding Raab's earlier work, such as the poorly received "Du gewinnst hier nicht die Million," which faced criticism for its lack of cohesion, he intends to deliver authenticity with the new show, advocating for the live format. Raab emphasized, "Live is actually the best you can do. Honestly, there’s no safety net. And I know from experience, people don’t hold it against you if you make mistakes."

Speculation is rife around Raab's potential influence on future political events, including Germany's looming elections scheduled for February 23, 2024. Some are hearing whispers of him reviving the comparative nature of his past TV duels to stir up discourse around the election. The show could serve not only as entertainment but as leverage for upcoming social discussions.

While reactions to Raab’s brand of humor may not be universally welcomed, his willingness to adapt makes him a compelling figure to watch as he embarks on this new chapter. With heavy reliance on familiar faces and formats, viewers may either embrace the nostalgia or hope to see the reinvention of multiple beloved aspects of past entertainments.

It’s undeniable; Raab's return has attracted attention, whether it raises eyebrows or evokes eagerness. The upcoming debut will be pivotal—will it revive Raab’s long-held title as the king of TV entertainment or merely serve as another flashback to the prime of German television?
