Steelers Sign Kenneth Gainwell After Harris Departure

Gainwell transitions to Pittsburgh after four successful seasons with the Eagles, seeking increased playing time.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making strategic moves as they finalize signing running back Kenneth Gainwell to a one-year contract, following the recent departure of Najee Harris to the Los Angeles Chargers. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported the agreement on March 11, 2025, marking Gainwell's transition from the Philadelphia Eagles to Pittsburgh.

At just 25 years of age, Gainwell was initially drafted by the Eagles as the 150th overall pick during the 2021 NFL Draft. His tenure with Philadelphia included contributions to their successful runs, culminating with participation in the 2024 Super Bowl. Over four seasons, Gainwell rushed for 1,185 yards and tallied 12 touchdowns, alongside 102 receptions for 721 yards and another score.

With Najee Harris moving to the Chargers, the Steelers are now primarily led by Jaylen Warren, leaving Gainwell as significant backup help for the upcoming season. The Eagles’ loss is viewed as Gainwell’s opportunity to establish his presence as more than just a second-string running back, especially following minimal prior game time due to the consistent health and high performance of fellow backs like Miles Sanders, D'Andre Swift, and Saquon Barkley.

Gainwell’s performance established his capability during high-pressure moments, and his selection as one of four running backs drafted beyond the fifth round with notable rookie achievements brings experience and resilience to Pittsburgh’s lineup.

"We’re excited about it," Gainwell expressed, alluding to the opportunity to potentially play alongside his cousin, former Eagles defensive tackle Fletcher Cox, who has significantly impacted the family’s legacy within the NFL.

Before heading to the NFL, Gainwell’s high school stats turned heads. He distinguished himself during his time at Yazoo County High School, where he accomplished impressive feats, including passing for 3,682 yards and achieving 32 touchdowns. His rushing stats are even more staggering: 4,730 yards and 75 touchdowns. These achievements earned him recognition, including being named the Mississippi Association of Coaches Class 3A Player of the Year.

While attending the University of Memphis, Gainwell shined, playing alongside Steelers’ wide receiver Calvin Austin III. Gainwell recorded eye-catching statistics, such as 1,459 rushing yards and 610 receiving yards during the 2019 season. He also captured the nation's attention as he continued to excel throughout his college career.

Unfortunately, like many college athletes grappling with the pandemic, Gainwell had to opt out of the 2020 season due to personal tragedies within his family. He stated, "I had three family members pass away due to COVID. It was hard to talk with my family and try to clear my head. Family is important, and I had to prioritize them.”

Gainwell leaves behind his potential future with the Eagles, who relied heavily on his abilities as backup to their significant running backs. Coach Nick Sirianni’s offensive strategy relied on Gainwell’s agility and catching ability out of the backfield, which he leveraged during their campaign to the Super Bowl.

Looking forward to his role with the Steelers, Gainwell's pressing attribute is his fresh legs; entering the 2025 season with only 280 career carries gives him the upper hand over many competing players. "He’s super powerful. He’s super explosive," stated Saquon Barkley, remarking on Gainwell’s performance during drills at the Eagles’ training camp.

Add to this the Steelers’ need for depth after Harris’ departure and Gainwell becomes not just another running back but potentially a key player who can provide exceptional value. Featuring virtually no injury history or extensive wear and tear means Gainwell could capture significant attention should he grab the starting role.

The Steelers will need to evaluate Gainwell's abilities on the field, and with his established performances alongside several Pro Bowl running backs, they have high hopes. Gainwell is slated to be more than just another sign-in for backup. For him, it’s about taking more than just second-string duties. With competitors like Warren being due for unrestricted free agency by 2026, the pressure is on Gainwell to emerge as the Steelers’ cornerstone as they head toward the new season.

At the conclusion of this offseason, fans eagerly anticipate the performance of Gainwell as he joins the ranks of the Steelers and attempts to bring new energy to Pittsburgh’s offense.
