State Of Mexico Blanketed By Snow And Sleet

Cold front number 15 triggers significant snowfall, leading to closures and safety alerts.

Snow has blanketed the State of Mexico, particularly affecting the regions around El Nevado de Toluca and Jocotitlán, as communities brace for the impact of significant cold weather. Since the afternoon of December 22, 2024, areas like La Marquesa have reported the fall of aguanieve (sleet), resulting from temperatures plummeting as low as -5°C, driven by cold front number 15.

The morning of December 23 greeted La Marquesa with its landscapes transformed to white due to aguanieve accumulation, prompting local authorities to advise drivers to exercise caution to prevent accidents. "Se recomienda manejar con precaución por las condiciones en la carretera," stated Protección Civil of the State of Mexico.

Guided by seasonal expectations, the Coordinación de Protección Civil has strongly advised citizens to stay indoors and refrain from visiting the Nevado de Toluca park, which will remain closed until forestry and habitat authorities assess the safety of the area. This decision was amplified by the extremely cold weather and the hazardous conditions reported at the park, with officials noting, "El Nevado de Toluca y el Cerro de Jocotitlán se cubrieron de blanco."

During this winter season, many anticipated experiencing the breathtaking winter scenery of the Nevado de Toluca, which usually attracts winter sports enthusiasts and holiday travelers. Unfortunately, the adverse weather has rendered it unsafe for visitors, with the park announced closed due to the risk posed by icy conditions. Protection officials have already communicated this message through various platforms to inform potential visitors.

Forecasters at the National Meteorological Service are predicting more snowfall and rain for the State of Mexico, as they have forecasted the presence of rain with sporadic bouts of sleet and snow throughout the day. This severe weather will persist, with highs of 3 to 5°C seen across northern areas and maximum daytime temperatures expected to reach between 17°C and 19°C.

Conditions for more snow remain prevalent, especially for regions at altitudes above 3,000 meters, like the Nevado de Toluca. The areas around the majestic mountains, including Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl, are likely to experience similar weather patterns as moisture-laden air continues to surge from the Pacific Ocean. According to Conagua, "se prevén temperaturas muy bajas y aguanieve en las zonas más altas."

Residents are advised to prepare adequately for the cold snap, facing temperatures ranging from -5°C to 0°C, particularly impacting mountain regions. Morning fog and isolated rainfall are potential concerns, following the steep drop-off temperatures through the early mornings.

To stay warm and safe during this time, residents should dress appropriately; layering is key to maintaining body heat against the cold. Thermal clothes should be worn underneath warm sweaters, with waterproof jackets recommended to keep dry. Also, essentials such as gloves, hats, and scarves are necessary for those venturing outdoors.

Travelers planning to head to higher altitudes, like La Marquesa or the Nevado of Toluca, are urged to wear snow-appropriate clothing and footwear. "Debido al frío extremo y la lluvia, asegúrate de prepararte para mantenerte cómodo y seguro," officials implored. Smart packing for cold weather includes carrying umbrellas or waterproof jackets, sturdy footwear, and even sunblock, as sun exposure remains high at elevations.

While the State of Mexico is covered largely under white snow and icy precipitation, the severe conditions serve as both compelling beauty and formidable danger. The intercession of frigid temperatures and the potential for thunderstorms and increased precipitation necessitate careful planning and consideration.

Authorities have expressed their concern for public safety: "Las bajas temperaturas pueden provocar daños en tu salud," encouraging citizens to heed all guidelines for health and safety.

Lastly, as the community prepares for the Christmas festivities, nighttime temperatures are projected to fall sharply, landing between 6°C to 9°C during Nochebuena and Navidad, demanding continued precautionary measures for health and safety.

The cold has officially arrived, and with it, the need for the public to stay informed and prepared to mitigate the risks associated with the wintery embrace of El Estado de México.
