Starlink, the satellite internet service established by SpaceX founder Elon Musk, is rapidly gaining traction around the globe, improving connectivity and creating new applications across diverse sectors. According to Koha, Musk announced on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) late Saturday night, "Starlink now also available in Kosovo." This marked the official rollout of Starlink's services throughout the region after the Electronic Communications and Postal Regulatory Authority (ARKEP) granted approval for the use of the satellite network. With around 6,000 satellites orbiting just 500 kilometers above the Earth, Starlink boasts reduced communication delays by up to ten times compared to traditional geostationary satellites.
Rezarta Duraku Rizaj, a member of ARKEP's board, emphasized the significance of this launch, stating the infrastructure enhancement will bolster Kosovo’s digital capabilities, particularly for government agencies and businesses needing reliable communications during crises. Duraku Rizaj noted, "The authorization of Starlink has the highest impact on enhancing national security, especially during conflicts, due to its resilience against terrestrial damages."
Beyond Kosovo, Starlink is pushing its limits to deliver ultra-fast internet service aboard airplanes as major airlines, including British Airways and Iberia, begin negotiations with the International Airlines Group (IAG). Annalisa Gigante, IAG's innovation lead, told Bloomberg the Group is exploring both Starlink and Amazon’s Project Kuiper to offer passengers high-speed Wi-Fi. The competitive nature of satellite-based internet is evident as the airline industry strives to improve onboard connectivity, minimizing reliance on traditional providers like Viasat and Gogo.
