St. Lawrence Farmers’ Market Opens New North Building

After years of construction, the historic market returns indoors with a modern touch

The new St. Lawrence Farmers’ Market officially opened its doors on Saturday, April 5, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the market's long history. Located at 92 Front Street East at Jarvis Street, this new building represents a decade-long journey that began with the demolition of the previous structure in 2016. The market had been temporarily relocated to a tent behind the south building during the construction phase, which was fraught with delays and rising costs, ultimately totaling $128 million.

As the market returns to its roots, it brings with it the excitement of a new era. The new North Market building is a striking five-storey structure made of glass and orange metal, designed to enhance the community experience. The first and second floors are dedicated to the farmer’s market, while the upper floors serve as mixed-use areas, currently housing provincial offences courtrooms and counter services that moved in on March 5, 2025.

The St. Lawrence Market has a storied history, dating back to its inception in 1803, well before Canada’s confederation. Over the years, it has evolved from an outdoor vendor space to the enclosed south market building that many locals know today. The south market, which has been a staple in the area for around 120 years, is famous for its peameal bacon sandwiches, a culinary creation that originated right within its walls.

Community leaders have expressed their joy and relief at the completion of the new building. Suzanne Kavanagh, past president of the St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association, shared her excitement about the opening. "When people walk in on Saturday, I'm hoping that they will find the joy that I find," she said. Kavanagh emphasized that the previous North Market building was not conducive to communal events, describing it as a "concrete slab" that lacked the warmth and character necessary for a vibrant market atmosphere.

The new design features a large atrium that provides stunning views of both St. Lawrence Hall and the South Market building, creating an inviting space for shoppers and vendors alike. Kavanagh believes that the beauty of the new facility will soon overshadow the frustrations caused by construction delays and budget overruns. "I think people will soon forget about the delays and rising costs when they see the building, which she calls a gift. And it's not just for the neighbourhood, but for the entire city," she added.

Scott Barrett, the director of property management services for the city, echoed Kavanagh's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of the farmer's market to the local community. "It's part of the fabric of the neighborhood," Barrett stated. He highlighted that the new venue would also be available for corporate events, weddings, and other functions, with rental income and a paid parking lot beneath the market contributing to the building's upkeep.

The official grand opening celebration is scheduled for May 10, 2025, when the market will fully showcase its offerings and the community can celebrate this new chapter together. For now, the excitement is palpable as vendors begin to set up shop in the new space, ready to welcome back customers to the heart of the city.

As the St. Lawrence Farmers’ Market embarks on this new journey, it stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of the community that has supported it for over two centuries. With its rich history and the promise of a bright future, the market continues to be a beloved destination for both locals and visitors alike.
