'Squid Game' Season Two Stumbles Amid Criticism

Dismal reviews lead to crashing shares for companies linked to actor Lee Jung-jae following Netflix's latest hit release.

Shares linked to actor Lee Jung-jae take a nosedive as reactions pour in for the much-awaited second season of Netflix's 'Squid Game.' Known for revolutionizing global attention on Korean content since its explosive debut, the new installment failed to garner the same positive reception, causing financial tremors for companies associated with the star.

Immediately following the premiere of 'Squid Game' season two on December 26, stock prices plummeted for prominent firms where Lee is invested. Artist Studio saw its shares drop by nearly 30 percent, closing at 15,750 won ($10.66) on the Kosdaq. Artist United, another company with Lee as the principal shareholder, faced similar losses, with its shares declining nearly 30 percent as well. This fall is notable for the companies which previously saw their values surge following significant Golden Globe nominations for the series.

After the season two premiere, the wave of disappointment from foreign critics may have played a role. The New York Times criticized the season for having "hit a red light," describing how the narrative stagnates instead of introducing fresh twists. USA Today echoed this sentiment, labeling the new installment as "still violent, but more disappointing than shocking." The Guardian lamented its plot, stating it spent too many episodes dragging painfully, urging fans to hope for improvements for season three.

'Squid Game' season two continues to follow the story of Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the last standing survivor from the first season. Now reengaging with the deadly games, he seeks to unravel the mystery behind the game’s orchestrators to end the atrocities for good. The narrative presents not only thrilling action but also poignant explorations of wealth disparity, evoking connections to the socioeconomic struggles faced by many.

Viewers are introduced to recurring elements from the first season, bringing back key characters like The Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who finds himself embroiled once again within the games. New faces emerge, including the return of Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), who mirrors Gi-hun's desperation as they both face towering debts.

At its conception, 'Squid Game' tackled themes reflecting real societal issues. Season two continues this critique, showcasing how the games exploit individuals rendered nearly hopeless by financial burdens, shedding light on systemic poverty exacerbated by capitalism. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series creator, previously shared how he sought to portray these stark contrasts through storytelling, reflecting on personal experiences of hardship.

Episode one begins slowly, highlighting the aftermath of Gi-hun's previous ordeal. It explores the repercussions within his life and how he grapples with memories of survival. Importantly, the season also sheds light on the societal critique woven throughout the games, evident through scenes illustrating exploitation and existential despair faced by players.

Compound this substance with shocking moments: Episode one ends with Gi-hun dangerously engaging The Recruiter (Gong Yoo) in Russian Roulette. Rather than ceasing violence to urgently exterminate the threat, Gi-hun’s addiction to risky games surfaces, complicity grounded within the backdrop of personal trauma and unexpected character growth. The abruptness of such scenes serves to maintain viewer tension and reflect the precariousness of life for those involved.

Throughout the episode, characterization begins to thrive, with development on characters like Hyun-ju, portrayed by Park Sung-hoon. Hyun-ju, aiming to complete gender-affirming surgery and live authentically, stands as the first transgender character showcased within the show. This not only lends broader representation within K-dramas but also stirs discussions about LGBTQ+ visibility and acceptance within South Korea.

Nonetheless, the reception remains mixed. Some critique the slow pacing and repetitive nature compared to its predecessor; others are eager to see how the overarching narrative will evolve. Fans wonder about the potential directions the plot might take, especially with looming cliffhangers and developments for upcoming seasons.

Stark commentary on the affectations of wealth and privilege remain woven within the fabric of each game presented, drawing stark parallels with current realities faced by millions worldwide. Whether audiences feel the same sense of urgency, shock, and intrigue found during the first season remains to be seen.

While significant surprises lay hidden, momentum is gained as fans hope for improvements by the anticipated third season, set to release in 2025. The episodes left viewers eager for resolutions, questioning the fates of fragmented character relationships, revenge, and justice against the blanketed elite operating behind the scenes.

Development is stifled, and investors feel the aftershocks of disappointing reception, yet hope persists as both audiences and characters await the next moves. For now, the veil remains thin; the players must confront their inner demons alongside their external foes. Each episode delves incrementally closer to answers, but only time will reveal the depth of darkness yet unfurled.
