Spurs Edge Hawks 126-125 In Fox's Debut With Wembanyama

De'Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama shine as San Antonio claims narrow victory over Atlanta.

ATLANTA (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs kicked off their campaign with excitement as they clinched a thrilling 126-125 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night, thanks to the dazzling debut of De'Aaron Fox. The 7-foot-3 rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama, showcased his rising prowess alongside Fox, culminating in what can only be described as an unforgettable introduction to the Spurs’ reimagined team.

Fox, having made the jump from Sacramento via a recent three-team trade just days earlier, wasted no time making his mark. Scoring 24 points and matching his season high with 13 assists, Fox orchestrated the game effectively. “He is different. He is special. Just the type of defensive attention he receives allows you to do things you don't normally do,” Fox remarked post-game, reflecting on his teammate Wembanyama’s unique impact on the court.

Wembanyama, the reigning NBA rookie of the year, equally dazzled with 24 points and 12 rebounds, proving once again why he is one of the most talked-about prospects in the league. His clutch play included hitting the go-ahead free throw with just 2.4 seconds remaining, sealing the victory for the Spurs. “Our goals for the season are even more attainable. We get to use all our strengths and we just added a big strength,” Wembanyama said, expressing optimism about the new duo's potential.

With the game on the line, Wembanyama strategically missed his second free throw, denying the Hawks any chance for an immediate response. The Hawks struggled to combine their talents effectively, even as star player Trae Young delivered another impressive performance with 32 points and 12 assists.

The game was filled with tension, particularly as the Hawks rallied from a 20-point deficit. Atlanta’s Onyeka Okongwu turned heads with a career-high 30 points, and his teamwork with Young energized their late-game push. With under two minutes remaining, Young successfully tied the game twice, demonstrating the team’s resilience albeit falling short at the finish.

Spurs' acting coach Mitch Johnson had predicted Fox’s seamless integration beforehand. Johnson noted, “A player of his caliber and experience has been around the league... I don't see any issue with him getting up to speed.” From the opening tip-off, Fox took charge, attempting the Spurs' first shot and accumulating 18 points by halftime. His performance showcased sincerity as he aimed to fit right with his new teammates. “When I came in, everybody told me to be myself and not to come in and try to fit in. That's why I think this group can be special,” Fox explained, emphasizing the collaborative spirit he felt upon joining the team.

The Spurs dominated the first half, heading to halftime with their highest total points for the season, leading Atlanta 72-54. Jeremy Sochan played a significant role with key plays contributing to their established lead after only leading 22-21 early on.

Despite the final score, Atlanta displayed determination through the second half, orchestrated by De'Andre Hunter's clutch 3-pointer. Nevertheless, Fox's influence on the team's dynamic augurs well as they aim for higher aspirations this season.

San Antonio's fans will be excited to witness the duo of Fox and Wembanyama develop, with their next game on the road against Charlotte. Meanwhile, the Hawks will seek redemption on their home turf as they prepare to take on Milwaukee this Friday night.
