Spring Rhapsody Exhibition Celebrates Senior Creativity

Art show highlights the talents of older adults at Almaty’s Central State Museum

The "Spring Rhapsody" exhibition at the Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan is set to celebrate creativity and artistic expression among seniors. Initiated by the Active Longevity Center Almaty, this vibrant event features the artworks of participants aged 61 to 84, and it opens just before International Women’s Day on March 8, running until March 9, 2025.

The exhibition showcases 96 pieces crafted using diverse techniques such as watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and oil, covering themes ranging from bouquets symbolizing spring and femininity to landscapes and abstract compositions. Highlights include pieces steeped in deep philosophical meaning inspired by both natural beauty and the inner landscapes of the artists.

"The aim of the exhibition is to show society, creativity and art have no age limits," said Marlan Nysanbaev, the educator and artist behind the initiative. According to Nysanbaev, art has become not only a means of self-expression for these seniors but also serves as a significant tool of art therapy, enhancing both physical and emotional well-being.

At the opening, attendees were treated to a concert program, where the age model group "Almaty әжелері" showcased their fashionable collection, "Ак кербез." The presence of the Academy of Arts of Kazakhstan was also notable; during the opening, they awarded Saule Beketaeva, the director of the Active Longevity Center Almaty, and Zina Ishanova, the head of the department, with the "Ұлы елдің Таранды медалімен" for their contributions.

The Active Longevity Center Almaty, founded to provide seniors with unique avenues for maintaining health and social engagement, offers over 40 types of services. These include doctor consultations, psychological training, therapeutic physical activities, yoga classes, and workshops covering various artistic techniques. Such offerings are aimed squarely at improving the quality of life for older adults.

"We want to demonstrate starting to engage with art can happen at any age, bringing pleasure and positive changes to life," Nysanbaev emphasized, highlighting the importance of accessibility to creative expressions for seniors as they navigate their later years.

This exhibition not only showcases the participants' artistic talents but also emphasizes the community aspect of the Active Longevity Center, where older adults gather, interact, and thrive together. It is clear from the attendance and the lively atmosphere at the opening night event, these seniors derive great joy from sharing their creativity with one another and the wider community.

The event reflects the broader trend of recognizing and valuing the contributions of seniors to culture and society. Demonstrations like "Spring Rhapsody" clearly showcase the skills and creativity of older generations, urging society to reconsider preconceived notions of aging and abilities.

To those interested, the exhibition will run through March 9, 2025, at the Central State Museum, located at Samal-1, d. 44, Almaty. It stands not just as an exhibition of art, but as proof of the vibrant and active lives led by many seniors today, inspiring others to explore their creative potentials regardless of age.

With plans already underway for future events, including more exhibitions and community gatherings, the Active Longevity Center continues to be a beacon for nurturing the spirit of creativity and connection among older generations.
