Spring Dramas Shine With Caster And Candlestick

Abe Sadao stars in gripping dramas exploring truth and deception this season

In a vibrant spring season for Japanese television, drama writer Kana Namoto has ranked her top picks, highlighting the best of this year’s offerings. Among the standout shows is the much-anticipated drama 'Caster', which has captured the attention of viewers with its gripping narrative and star-studded cast.

Ranked third among the spring dramas, 'Caster' delves into the world of journalism, centering on a news program where the protagonist, played by the acclaimed actor Abe Sadao, seeks to uncover buried truths and confront evil. This marks Abe's sixth lead role in a Sunday drama over the past three years, a fact that adds weight to the show's potential success.

Namoto expressed her enthusiasm for 'Caster', noting that Abe's previous works, such as 'Shitamachi Rocket', 'Dragon Sakura', and 'DCU', have all been well-received. "Given the trend, it seems likely that his latest Sunday drama will also be a hit!" she remarked, suggesting that viewers can expect a captivating experience.

In a time when the entertainment industry is buzzing, the show's theme resonates deeply. The protagonist, Shindo, embodies the belief that "truth moves the world!" Namoto believes this bold approach reflects the production team's commitment to delivering a powerful narrative.

Adding to the show's appeal is the inclusion of popular younger actors Nagano Mei and Michieda Shunsuke, who are expected to attract a youthful audience. Traditionally, Sunday dramas target salarymen, but 'Caster' has the potential to engage a broader demographic, particularly if its storyline unfolds compellingly.

Intriguingly, the official drama website hints at an intriguing plot twist: "When they achieve their true ideals, the truth behind a buried incident will be revealed?!" This element of mystery is sure to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Namoto hopes that 'Caster' will transform often gloomy Sunday nights into something enjoyable for audiences.

In addition to the excitement surrounding 'Caster', the film 'Candlestick', a Japan-Taiwan co-production, is set to hit theaters on July 4, 2025. The film stars Abe Sadao alongside Kaho in their first collaboration. The story revolves around Nohara, a genius hacker portrayed by Abe, who finds himself imprisoned for stock manipulation.

Kaho plays Kyoko, an FX trader who resonates with Nohara and decides to support his bold plan. The film's plot thickens as Linne, played by Alissa Chia from Taiwan, seeks to exploit Nohara's exceptional skills to manipulate the FX market for massive profits.

Set against a backdrop of international intrigue, 'Candlestick' unfolds across four countries and six cities, showcasing a thrilling narrative filled with deception and strategy. The film's production took place in Japan, Taiwan, and Iran from May to September 2024, under the direction of Kyota Mikkura, marking his debut as a film director.

The decision day for the film's pivotal events is set during May 2019, coinciding with the birth of Japan's new emperor, a detail that adds historical significance to the narrative. The film's original story is based on Tokuro Kawamura's 'Togire: FX Simulation Success Story'.

Alongside Abe and Kaho, the cast features Kenjiro Tsuda as Kyoko's ex-husband, and other notable actors including Lynn Pohon, Sahel Rosa, YOUNG DAIS, Maftei Husein Sildi, and David Ridge, contributing to a diverse and international ensemble.

The film's title, 'Candlestick', refers to the candlestick charting technique familiar to traders, hinting at the financial themes that will be explored throughout the film. As the world of finance becomes increasingly complex and intertwined with technology, 'Candlestick' promises to deliver a thrilling viewing experience that captures the essence of modern financial intrigue.

With both 'Caster' and 'Candlestick', audiences can look forward to a spring filled with compelling narratives that explore themes of truth, deception, and the pursuit of justice. As these stories unfold, they not only entertain but also provoke thought about the world we live in and the truths we hold dear.
