SpaceX Soars Higher As Starship Series Hits New Milestones

With successful tests and ambitious plans, SpaceX readies for upcoming Starship missions

SpaceX's Starship program has soared to new heights as the aerospace company gears up for its next round of test flights. The anticipation surrounding the upcoming tests is palpable, as various reports paint the picture of what’s been achieved and what lies ahead.

On March 14, 2024, SpaceX launched its gigantic Starship rocket for the third time. The test, which took off from Boca Chica, Texas at 9:25 AM ET, marked another step forward for SpaceX's ambitious plans to use Starship for missions to the Moon and beyond. The flight got off to a roaring start as the spacecraft successfully separated from its booster three minutes post-launch, hitting milestones no other previous launches achieved.

During its flight, Starship made strides, covering more distance than its earlier test runs. However, just before it reached its planned splashdown site in the Indian Ocean, communication was lost with the vehicle.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), who authorized the mission, SpaceX met all necessary requirements for safety and environment, which is critical for any aerospace endeavor. During earlier attempts, such as the inaugural Starship mission, explosive failures were the talking points of the day. For example, the first flight resulted not only in the destruction of the vehicle but also significant damage and debris strewn across the launch site. Learning from mishaps like these has been key for SpaceX as they move forward.

SpaceX has embraced what they call “rapid iterative development,” which allows them to take lessons from each flight. So far, they’ve implemented changes based on their experiences from previous launches. The organization doesn’t shy away from pushing the boundaries and learning through failures. The Starship rocket stands impressively at about 400 feet tall, made up of two parts: the reusable upper stage called Starship and the Super Heavy first-stage booster. Both components are powered by SpaceX's next-gen Raptor engines—33 for Super Heavy and six for the upper stage. Not only is this rocket set to assist NASA with its Artemis program to bring humans back to the Moon, but it’s also projected as the future means for humans to travel to Mars.

Starship's third flight was described by Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president and COO, as “incredibly successful,” even though challenges were encountered. The upper stage successfully opened its payload door and attempted the first-ever propellant transfer demonstration. Yet, the much-anticipated relight of the Raptor engines did not go according to plan due to the roll the vehicle experienced. This led to the upper stage breaking apart during reentry at around 65 kilometers above Earth.

Investigation committees led by the FAA and SpaceX's own experts are now poring over data from the flight to identify root causes of the issues faced during the mission. The rapid handling of investigations has become part and parcel of SpaceX’s operations. The FAA is looking to streamline the licensing process, aiming to allow multiple launches under one license instead of individual approvals each time.

Plans for the next launch are already underway, with expectations set for early May. One of the significant targets for this upcoming flight includes the successful deployment of satellites via Starship, which would mark another milestone toward operational spaceflight capabilities. However, it’s not just about getting the rockets to fly; it’s also about landing them precisely, something Shotwell emphasized as critical for future operations.

Elon Musk’s vision for the Starship program is grand: to make space travel commonplace and push the boundaries of exploration. The approach SpaceX is taking is unique—they build, launch, and learn quickly. Their model includes firing up the rocket, seeing what works and doesn’t work, and immediately applying those lessons to the next build.

To give you some context, the failures seen during previous flights, such as the second flight where Starship exploded around eight minutes post-launch, are not seen as failures by SpaceX. They are milestones of knowledge. The notion of accepting failure as part of the process—including missed goals, vehicle disassembly mid-air, and other calamities—has driven SpaceX's rapid development cycle. The idea is simple: learn fast to innovate faster.
