Southport Rioter Jailed After Viral Brick Attack

Brian Spencer sentenced for violent disorder during riots following stabbings of three children.

A Southport rioter, captured on viral footage being hit with bricks during violent riots, has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison. Brian Spencer, 40, became infamous after taunting police during chaos following the tragic stabbing of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class.

On July 30, Spencer was part of a violent mob, which displayed aggressive behavior against law enforcement following community outrage over the stabbings at the dance class. The event, held at a venue for local children, ended tragically with Bebe King, six; Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven; and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar fatally wounded. The riot escalated as the far-right English Defence League exploited the situation to promote their own agenda.

Spencer's actions on the day of the riot were captured on surveillance cameras. Not only was he recorded throwing bricks at police officers, but he was also seen hitting and kicking police vehicles, as well as hurling wheelie bins during the outburst of violence. One particularly notable moment occurred as he gyrated provocatively and mocked the police, moments before he was struck by bricks—first hitting him on the head and then making contact with his groin.

According to Merseyside Police, the footage of Spencer being assaulted by his own peers quickly spread across social media platforms, leading to widespread public attention. Detective Inspector Paula Jones remarked, 'The actions of the people who took part in the disorder were extremely serious, and many officers were injured during the despicable scenes as bricks, bins, and other missiles were thrown at them.'

After being injured, Spencer was taken to the hospital where he received treatment for his injuries. Interestingly, it was there he was arrested after officers recognized him from the viral footage. While recovering, he engaged in racially abusive behavior toward another hospital patient, contributing to the additional charges against him.

At Liverpool Crown Court, Spencer pleaded guilty to violent disorder and racially/religiously aggravated harassment, receiving the sentence for his part in the riots. His actions are emblematic of the broader disturbances, where Merseyside Police arrested 163 individuals, resulting in 117 charged with various offenses and 88 having received significant prison sentences totaling over 182 years.

The disturbances were part of wider unrest related to far-right extremism and came at the heels of the tragic stabbings. These riots were part of a larger national pattern of unrest, reportedly involving over 1,700 arrests and more than 1,000 charges spanning several cities as tensions flared across the UK.

Notably, the far-right elements drew attention to misinformation circulating about the identity of the attacker involved in the stabbings, likely inflaming tensions among protesters and leading to violent confrontations with the police.

Detective Inspector Jones stated, 'Spencer was involved in the violence and will now spend a significant amount of time in prison'. Jones added their commitment to reviewing footage and information continually as they aim to bring all accountable individuals to justice.

The unrest ignited conversations about police preparedness and the response to far-right violence, with reports emphasizing the necessity for improved handling of such situations to prevent future escalations. The public and law enforcement officials alike have echoed the need for decisive action against instigators of violence to safeguard communities.

Spencer’s case highlights the chaotic aftermath of community tragedies, and as authorities continue to investigate the riots, more individuals are likely to face similar repercussions for their participation. This event serves as a pivotal moment for law enforcement and community relations moving forward.
