Multiple vibrant events are set to celebrate culture, community, and art on March 9, 2025.

On Sunday, March 9, 2025, Southern California is abuzz with excitement, as multiple vibrant events take place across the region, each offering unique opportunities for local residents to engage with art, culture, and community celebrations.

Leading the pack is the much-anticipated L.A. Chinatown Firecracker festival, now marking its 47th year. Celebrated at the historic Los Angeles Chinatown Plaza, this festival is not only about fireworks; it features runs, walks, and even cycling events with dog-walking activities to boot. The day kicks off with an exhilarating opening ceremony, which includes traditional lion dancers and, not surprisingly, the ceremonial lighting of 100,000 firecrackers, setting the tone for the thrilling festivities to follow. Post-race, attendees can choose to enjoy the street festival, which showcases local vendors, delectable food options, live entertainment, and activities suitable for children. The festival creates an atmosphere of festivities and community bonding, making it one of the largest and oldest running races held across the United States.

Meanwhile, Wescom Kindness is hosting its 11th annual Daylight Savings initiative across Southern California, where patrons can enjoy complimentary coffee and tea at 22 participating Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf locations. This community-focused initiative symbolizes kindness and provides residents with the much-needed boost after springing forward, especially as funds are capped at $2000 per location. It’s simply their way of sending warm wishes to local communities right as Daylight Savings kicks off.

At the Redondo Beach Pier, the 51st Festival of the Kite promises to be another highlight of the day, running from noon to 5 p.m. This skyward spectacle encourages residents and visitors to partake in contests with prize-winning kite flying categories, and abundant family-friendly fun. Picture this: brilliant kites of every color soaring high above sandy beaches, against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean, before veering off to enjoy delicious hot dogs at the pier's hot dog on-a-stick eating contest!

Another culturally significant event is the Nowruz Family Festival hosted by the Farhang Foundation at UCLA. Celebrated on this day to mark the beginning of spring and known as the Persian New Year, Nowruz brings together families to cherish the themes of renewal and rebirth. Attendees can immerse themselves in various traditional activities, including music performances, arts and crafts, cultural performances, and even savor Iranian cuisine at food stands serving tea, Shirini (sweets), and specialty sandwiches.

Art enthusiasts aren’t left behind! From March 6 to March 9, 2025, the work of documentary photographer Jonathan Rach, recognized for his collaboration with iconic bands such as Nine Inch Nails, is on display at his exhibition titled Self Destruct Tour, presented at the gallery located at 7615 W Sunset Blvd. This showcases stunning glimpses of the vibrant music scene through Rach's unique lens, promising to be a captivating experience.

For those interested, the USC Pacific Asia Museum is offering free admission this Sunday as part of its 'free second Sunday' program. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the artistic expressions and cultural narratives reflecting flora and fauna within Asian art and architecture.

Pet lovers can join the Barks & Brews event back at the LA Arboretum, where festivities are centered around dogs and their owners. With ample activities dedicated to bringing people and their pets together, it’s sure to be packed with fun.

Smorgasburg LA is celebrating International Women's Day by presenting a fascinating Women's History Month Festival, fostering dialogue and empowerment through various activities and vendor offerings. This exciting outdoor market will pay homage to women’s contributions across sectors—all taking place on the same Sunday.
