Southeastern Conference Sets Record With Seven Teams In NCAA Sweet 16

Ole Miss joins elite group after defeating Iowa State, highlighting SEC dominance this season.

In a historic moment for college basketball, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) has secured its reputation as one of the strongest leagues ever, sending a record-breaking seven teams to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. This achievement culminated on March 23, 2025, when the Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Iowa State Cyclones 91-78 at Fiserv Forum, marking Ole Miss’s first Sweet 16 appearance since 2001.

The seven teams from the SEC advancing to the Sweet 16 include Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas, and the recently added Ole Miss. Alabama started the day strong, tying the previous record of six teams in the Sweet 16 held by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) since 2016, with an emphatic win over Saint Mary's. Ole Miss then not only clinched the record-breaking seventh spot but did so convincingly, leading by as much as 26 points during the game.

With fourteen of the sixteen SEC teams receiving NCAA tournament bids this year, the league shattered the previous record of eleven teams in the tournament, solidifying its dominance in college basketball. The SEC not only achieved a remarkable overall winning percentage of 88.9% against non-conference teams but also compiled an impressive 58-19 record against other power conferences.

Matthew Murrell, a guard for Ole Miss, celebrated the achievement while donning sunglasses in the jubilant locker room post-game. He stated, “It shows the SEC, if it wasn’t the best, it's one of the best conferences of all time. You can say what you want to say, but you’ve got seven guys taking up almost half of the Sweet 16; it’s something special.”

The Rebels’ victory over Iowa State highlighted their journey, as Ole Miss managed to dominate the match, leading at halftime by eleven points and leaving no doubt about their capabilities. Coach Chris Beard, in his second year, framed the mission of the team with optimism, stating, “We set the objective really high. We want to go in the tournament. We want to have a good seed.”

Despite being one of the lower-seeded teams to reach this stage, Ole Miss’s unexpected rise in the tournament reflects the fierce competition within the SEC, with Murrell describing it as “a dogfight every night,” which impeccably prepared them for the challenges of March Madness. This sentiment resonates throughout the league, as teams have faced a punishing season leading up to the tournament.

While Ole Miss made history, the SEC’s performance in the tournament is particularly noteworthy considering that it was not merely about sending teams to the Sweet 16 but also the overall team performance across rounds. For instance, while Auburn, Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Arkansas had previously secured their spots, the SEC also illustrated the depth of its talent pool, with unexpected upsets and standout performances from teams that were believed to be at a disadvantage.

Reflecting on the tournament's progression, the SEC now finds itself in a unique position—having only four conferences represented in the Sweet 16, which has not occurred since 2007. As teams like Arkansas look to continue their surprising runs, they might find themselves squaring off against the likes of Florida in the upcoming regional finals. The anticipated match-up also highlights the competitive nature as two more SEC teams, Kentucky and Tennessee, prepare to duel in Indianapolis.

Outside of Ole Miss’s triumph, the league's history continues with many teams striving to break through and make a mark this postseason, only amplifying the significance of this tournament. The SEC, along with the Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC, equals to a mere quartet of conferences in the Sweet 16, showcasing the concentrated talent within the leagues compared to previous years.

As the tournament progresses, this year’s NCAA tournament holds a pivotal essence of what it means for college basketball, with the SEC setting the tone strongly. From its record-breaking representations to competitive performances on the court, the SEC has made it clear that it is ready to pave more pathways in the legacy of college athletics.

The arena was filled not only with fans from Iowa State and Ole Miss but also an expectancy of excitement as schools vie for glory and further enchanting narratives are written in the grand tapestry of the NCAA tournament. With games continuing over the next few weeks, all eyes will be on the SEC landscape, and whether it can continue to build upon this historic season.
