As large-scale forest fires continue to rage across South Korea, local telecommunications companies are stepping up to provide crucial support to affected areas. The fires, which started on March 22, 2025, have persisted for several days, prompting the deployment of emergency resources to protect cultural heritage sites and local communities.
The fire began in Unhwa-ri, Onyang-eup, Ulju-gun, and has now posed a significant threat to notable landmarks, including Naewonam Hermitage, one of Ulsan's four major temples. According to local reports, this hermitage, deeply rooted in Ulsan’s history, could be at risk from the advancing flames.
Within the firefighting efforts, Ulju-gun has mobilized forest fire trucks and Marine Corps personnel to establish a defense line protecting the sacred site. An official from Ulju-gun stated, "We are building a defense line to prevent damage to the temple," highlighting the urgency and importance of protecting such culturally significant locations.
While the flames have thus far not inflicted any damage to Naewonam, the fire has spread over an area of 404 hectares. Historical sites, such as Unhwa-ri Seongji, a four-grain fortress dating back to the Silla Dynasty, may already be experiencing damage. Given that arboretums and natural recreation forests are situated near the fire-affected areas, additional precautions are essential for their protection.
Telecommunications firms are also actively supporting the afflicted regions. As of March 24, 2025, SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus have been providing resources to ensure communications remain operational despite the devastation. SK Telecom has established a situation room in a temporary shelter to monitor and respond to evolving needs. Furthermore, they have supplied Internet Protocol (IP) televisions and set up temporary Wi-Fi networks, along with distributing relief kits, auxiliary batteries, and mobile phone chargers.
KT has implemented a charging station at the integrated command center of the fire site, which can power up to 20 mobile phones simultaneously. They have also enhanced communication capabilities by installing Long Term Evolution (LTE) routers to strengthen Wi-Fi service. Additionally, KT coordinated with the Sancheong-gun Office to provide essential supplies like socks, underwear, snacks, and water for firefighters on the front lines.
Not to be left behind, LG Uplus dispatched battery-charging vehicles to facilitate the continuance of relief operations. They are committed to ensuring that even children affected by the disaster receive attention, with plans to deliver children’s relief goods composed of picture books and toys to temporary shelters.
As this unprecedented disaster unfolds, an official from SK Telecom reassured the public, stating, "Some communication equipment was affected by the power outage caused by the fire in the Sancheong wildfire area, but most of the power has been restored, so there is no problem with customer use." This response indicates a concerted effort to maintain communication integrity during the crisis.
The stakes are particularly high given the cultural and historical significance of the regions impacted by the fire. Naewonam Hermitage is linked to the legacy of Monk Wonhyo, a significant figure in Korean Buddhism, and the nearby 450-year-old hackberry tree at its entrance has been designated as a protected tree since 2010.
