South Korean Businesses Gear Up For 2025 Lunar New Year

Retailers and communities embrace healthy living and cultural celebrations for the upcoming year.

South Korean businesses are actively preparing for the upcoming 2025 Lunar New Year, signaling a vibrant push to meet consumer demands and celebrate the season joyfully. Retailers, particularly convenience stores like GS25, are rolling out promotions and launching new products to cater to health-conscious consumers.

The peak shopping season around the Lunar New Year is prime time for these businesses to capitalize on festive spending. According to recent data from GS25, sales of their health-oriented products have seen significant jumps. An analysis covering December 20 to January 3 revealed remarkable sales growth for items such as protein bars (up 32.2%), salads (up 16.1%), and cooked eggs (up 14.2%). The MZ generation, defined as individuals between their 20s and 30s, constitutes about 70% of these purchases, reflecting their increasing inclination toward self-care and wellness.

To engage this demographic, GS25 is launching several sales campaigns throughout January, namely the health management initiative dubbed 'resolution.' This project features 'buy one, get one' offers on various items, such as chicken breast and prepared meals. The introduction of high-protein rice balls aims to deliver substantial nutritional value, containing 10 grams of protein each, equal to approximately 1.5 eggs.

GS25 recognizes the enduring interest in health trends and plans to expand its offerings accordingly. They are also hosting promotional events for customers who purchase designated items, providing opportunities for them to win fitness-related prizes—a move to encourage customers to both shop and engage physically.

Simultaneous to retail preparations, cultural initiatives are also underway to enrich the holiday experience. One prominent event is the '2025 New Year Music Concert' set to take place at 수성아트피아 on January 18. According to 박동용, the director of the venue, “This New Year music concert is aimed at bringing hope and joy to citizens.” The evening will feature performances by local artists, including violinist 김남훈 and young opera singers, celebrating the spirit of the season with both classical and contemporary pieces.

The concert not only seeks to entertain but also aims to recognize and show gratitude toward volunteers and underprivileged communities by inviting them to experience the gift of culture. This initiative aligns with the growing trend of inclusivity, ensuring diverse participation from all socio-economic sectors.

Even with the challenges faced by various sectors, the atmosphere heading toward the Lunar New Year appears buoyant. Businesses are recalibrated to offer products matching contemporary consumers' desires, particularly around health awareness and community engagement. Such efforts reflect the cultural significance of the celebration, intertwining commerce with the authentic spirit of giving, sharing, and togetherness.

Preparations are also taking place across local communities, with city governments and organizations promoting educational initiatives aimed at enhancing agricultural practices. For example, initiatives such as the '2025 New Year Agriculture Practical Education' program will provide training to local farmers and those interested, focusing on topics like pest prevention and sustainable farming techniques. These programs aim to empower agricultural communities facing climatic challenges.

With the 2025 Lunar New Year drawing closer, South Korean businesses and communities are gearing up to celebrate the occasion uniquely, blending traditional practices with modern consumer behaviors. They aim not only to meet market demands but also to reinvigorate cultural values and social bonds, marking the new year with optimism and enthusiasm.
