South Korea Commemorates 65th Anniversary Of April 19 Revolution

During the ceremony, Kwon was joined by National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik and Democratic Party leader Park Chan-dae, among others. Together, they paid their respects at the Student Revolution Memorial Tower, reflecting on the significance of the day. Kwon remarked, "The freedom and prosperity we enjoy today are rooted in the sacrifices of countless individuals who fought for our rights. We will always revive and prosper the April 19 democratic ideology enshrined in the Constitution."

Shin Dong-wook, a senior attorney and spokesperson for the People Power Party, highlighted the ongoing relevance of the April 19 spirit, which he noted is enshrined in the preamble of the Constitution as "inheriting the April 19 democratic ideology that resisted injustice." He warned that the country’s democracy is currently at a critical juncture, stating, "The national administration is paralyzed due to the reckless legislative offensive of the opposition party, and the current situation threatens the separation of powers." He underscored the urgent need for the principles of freedom, democracy, and justice to be upheld in these challenging times.

Han Duck-soo, the acting President and Prime Minister, also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of national unity in overcoming current crises. "There are still many challenges and tasks ahead of the Republic of Korea," he said. "When the strength of the people comes together as one, we can overcome any difficulties." Han called for the transformation of conflict into cooperation, urging citizens to unite in the face of growing geopolitical risks and domestic social conflicts.

Reflecting on the historical significance of the April 19 Revolution, Han stated, "The spirit of April 19 symbolizes the values of freedom, democracy, and justice and has become the cornerstone of today's Constitution." He also noted the recent recognition of the April 19 Revolution’s historical records as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, highlighting the importance of preserving this legacy for future generations.

Yoo Jung-bok, a candidate in the upcoming 6.3 by-election from the People Power Party, visited the April 19th Student Uprising Memorial Tower to commemorate the anniversary. He remarked that the April 19 Revolution laid the foundation for the freedom and prosperity enjoyed today but warned of a critical crisis facing democracy due to attacks from pro-North Korean forces and the opposition party's actions. Yoo emphasized the need to revive the revolutionary spirit of mutual respect and understanding that characterized the movement.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party, represented by Woo Won-shik, reiterated their commitment to the April 19 spirit, asserting that they would strive to break through the current administration led by President Yoon Seok-yeol and prove that the people are the true masters of the nation.

The memorial ceremony was held under the theme "April is always green," symbolizing hope and renewal. Participants included not only political leaders but also citizens who came to pay tribute to the heroes of the revolution. Han Duck-soo, in his address, acknowledged the sacrifices of those who paved the way for democracy in South Korea, stating, "The April 19 Revolution is a shining achievement in the history of our democracy that we must all remember."
