South Korea Commemorates 106th Anniversary Of March 1st Movement

Acting President Choi Sang-mok calls for national unity amid growing societal divisions and tensions.

Seoul, March 1 (Yonhap) -- During the recent ceremony marking the 106th anniversary of the March 1st Independence Movement, South Korea's acting president, Choi Sang-mok, emphasized the urgent need for national unity amid rising societal division.

Choi delivered his speech during the celebrations held on March 1, which commemorates the 1919 uprising against Japanese colonial rule. His remarks came at a time when South Korea is experiencing significant tensions and protests involving supporters and opponents of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who has been temporarily suspended from his duties following the imposition of martial law.

The anniversary serves as a pivotal moment, recalling the sacrifices made during Japan's rule from 1910 to 1945. Choi warned, "Today, the specter of conflict and division looms larger within our society," highlighting the growing ideological, regional, and generational rifts. He stressed the potential threat these issues pose to the nation's future if not addressed.

He pointed to the economic challenges facing South Korea, exacerbated by downgraded growth forecasts tied to the protracted political uncertainty and rising global trade protectionism. Choi noted the increasing geopolitical risks worldwide, compounding the uncertainties affecting the economy and international relations.

Choi, who also serves as the finance minister, vowed to expedite the economic recovery process by boosting people's livelihoods and creating more job opportunities. He acknowledged the necessity for sustainable development and reform across various sectors, especially to promote balanced regional development, as the nation's infrastructure and industries are heavily concentrated around the capital region.

He expressed hope for cultivating new avenues in South Korea-Japan relations, marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic normalization between the two countries. Choi reiterated the importance of cooperation to effectively address the serious international situation.

Significantly, Choi highlighted the need for national cohesion as the country grapples with increasing polarization and challenges during the commemoration of such a historically important event.

The ceremonies took place with the presence of political party leaders and other dignitaries, reinforcing the collective remembrance of the struggles for independence and the continued spirit of resilience.
