A 36-year-old South African man has been sentenced to nine life terms for his involvement in a series of brutal murders and rapes of young girls, sending shockwaves through the community of Embalenhle, Mpumalanga. The Secunda regional court handed down the severe punishment to Themba Shongwe on Wednesday, following a lengthy trial.
Shongwe's tragic and disturbing crime spree began in 2016 and included the violent assaults of several young girls. His first victim was just 16 years old, whom he attacked, robbed of her cellphone, and raped at a local soccer field. The South African Police Service (SAPS) played a pivotal role in the investigation, and Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi commended the dedication of the detectives involved. "His reign of terror made life hard for Embalenhle residents, but thanks to the detective work the court imposed a heavy sentence for each atrocity. We are glad this perpetrator has been removed from society for good after terrorising women. We hope the sentence will send a clear message..." Mkhwanazi remarked during the court proceedings.
