The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued urgent warnings for a heatwave and severe thunderstorms impacting various regions across the country, raising concerns among residents and officials alike. High temperatures are anticipated to soar through the North West, Limpopo, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and the Free State, setting the stage for what could become one of the hottest spells felt nationwide.
According to SAWS, the affected regions are experiencing persistently high temperatures with warnings particularly aimed at the North West, the eastern and central parts of the Free State, and southern parts of Limpopo. Compliments to these high temperatures, Gauteng and the extreme southwestern parts of Mpumalanga are also poised for exceptionally warm conditions. "A heatwave with persistently high temperatures is expected over the North West; the eastern and central parts of the Free State; Gauteng as well as southern parts of Limpopo; and the extreme south western parts of Mpumalanga," SAWS stated.
While warm to hot conditions are expected nationwide, regional reports forecast some areas experiencing very hot temperatures. The ominous forecast doesn’t end with heat; severe thunderstorms are on the horizon. SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for these thunderstorms, which are projected to bring heavy downpours, strong winds, and hail—conditions ripe for localized flooding, particularly across the Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, and Limpopo.
Isolated thunderstorms are also likely to strike eastern districts, including parts of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. Given the variability of weather patterns, communities are encouraged to stay vigilant as "episodes of heatwaves have occurred as well as localized flooding and remain likely for the remainder of summer," warned the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD).
The DALRRD is actively advising farmers to prepare for the challenges posed by these extreme conditions. The department notes the significance of managing livestock numbers according to the carrying capacity of the veld. They stress, "Livestock should be kept in balance with carrying capacity of the veld and provided with additional feed such as relevant licks." This advice is particularly pertinent when considering the risks posed by increased pests and diseases associated with hot, wet conditions.
Farmers are also alerted to the necessity of ensuring adequate water sources and shelters for livestock during adverse weather conditions. This proactive approach will hopefully mitigate the risks posed by the extreme temperatures and rainfall predicted.
Reports are surfacing of veld fires already occurring across several provinces, with the threat severely heightened, especially during summer rainfall periods. The DALRRD highlights the urgency of maintaining fire belts and adhering to veld fire warnings, as winter rainfall regions are drying out, which exacerbates the fire risk.
Areas anticipated to be affected by the extreme weather are taking precautionary measures. Communities are reminded of the need for readiness in the face of severe thunderstorms, which may lead to damage to properties and disruptions to municipal services. Heavy downpours and considerable amounts of small hail, alongside strong damaging winds and excessive lightning could easily lead to localized flooding, particularly affecting vulnerable zones.
