Sorocaba Mayor Rodrigo Manga Under Investigation Amid Political Ambitions

Federal Police conduct Operation 'Copia e Cola' targeting alleged embezzlement in health sector as Manga eyes presidential run.

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, the mayor of Sorocaba, Rodrigo Manga (Republicanos), found himself at the center of a significant federal investigation dubbed Operation 'Copia e Cola.' This operation, led by the Federal Police (PF), aims to dismantle an alleged criminal organization suspected of embezzling public health resources. The investigation has garnered national attention due to Manga's rise in popularity and his recent announcement of his candidacy for the presidency in 2026.

Manga, who assumed the mayoral office in 2021 after winning the municipal elections, has become known for his engaging social media presence. His humorous and viral videos, which often showcase projects and initiatives from his administration, have attracted almost 6 million followers across platforms like Instagram and TikTok. His unique approach to communication has earned him the nickname "the TikTok mayor," and he claims that people are tired of traditional political discourse.

Despite his popularity, the PF executed 28 search and seizure warrants across various locations, including Manga's residence, as part of the operation. While no incriminating evidence was found in his home, the operation did yield a significant cache of cash, weapons, and a luxury Porsche 911 Carrera, valued at over 800,000 BRL, from the homes of other individuals involved in the investigation.

Manga has publicly dismissed the investigation as politically motivated, suggesting that it is a response to his increasing visibility in election polls. "I’m not afraid of you, President Lula, or any authority bothered by our rise," he stated in a video posted on his social media. This sentiment reflects his belief that the timing of the investigation is suspiciously aligned with his political ambitions.

In the wake of the investigation, the Public Prosecutor's Office (MP-SP) is scrutinizing the mayor's use of social media and the potential dissemination of misinformation regarding public health initiatives. One particular focus is on the alleged misuse of funds related to a robotics kit acquisition process, which has raised eyebrows due to suspicions of overpricing and mismanagement.

Furthermore, the investigation began in 2022 after indications of fraud in the hiring of a Social Organization (OS) responsible for managing health services in Sorocaba. The PF is also probing into possible money laundering activities linked to cash deposits and questionable real estate transactions associated with the OS.

In a recent interview with CNN, Manga maintained that he has nothing to hide and criticized the PF's actions as indicative of a broader trend of politicization within law enforcement. He stated, "We've seen this movie before with other names. The investigation is legitimate and necessary, but we must acknowledge the politicization that comes with it. Those who rise in the political arena often become targets for scrutiny." He further claimed that the agents found only trivial items such as carrot cake and a toy Pokémon during their search.

The mayor's controversial use of social media has not gone unnoticed. Experts have raised concerns about the potential spread of misinformation in his videos, which often feature exaggerated claims about the city's achievements. Manga has defended his online presence, arguing that it is essential to connect with citizens in a way that resonates with them.

As the investigation unfolds, the mayor's supporters and critics alike are closely watching the developments. The case has sparked debate about the intersection of politics and law enforcement in Brazil, particularly as it pertains to public figures who challenge the status quo. Manga's assertion that he is being targeted due to his political ambitions raises questions about the integrity of the investigation.

In addition to the ongoing investigation, the MP-SP has requested the freezing of assets worth up to 20 million BRL, further complicating Manga's political future. The mayor has expressed confidence in his innocence and has vowed to continue his work for the people of Sorocaba, stating, "No investigation will stop me from advancing our projects for the city and beyond." As the situation develops, the implications for both Manga's political career and the broader political landscape in Brazil remain to be seen.
