Sony has announced a significant price increase for its PlayStation Plus subscription service across various regions, including South Africa and Türkiye, effective from June 24, 2025. The price hikes, which range from 16% to over 55%, have sparked backlash from gamers already facing economic challenges in their respective countries.
In South Africa, subscribers to PlayStation Plus received emails notifying them of the impending price adjustments. The monthly fee for the Essential tier will rise from R119 to R139, while the Extra tier will see an increase from R179 to R209. The Deluxe tier, which offers additional benefits, will jump from R1,879 to R2,199 annually, marking a substantial increase of 17%.
According to Sony, this price adjustment is necessary to continue providing high-quality games and benefits to subscribers. "This price increase will not take effect until your next payment date that occurs on or after June 24, 2025," the company stated in its communications to subscribers. However, any changes made to memberships prior to this date will reflect the new pricing structure.

Although the official pricing for the Essential tier has not been disclosed, it is anticipated to rise from ₺1,400 to approximately ₺2,180 based on the same percentage increase.
This marks the second major hike in Türkiye following a staggering 600% increase in 2023 due to currency depreciation and inflation. Many Turkish gamers are expressing frustration over the rising costs, which they argue make the platform less accessible. Some players are opting to renew their subscriptions at current rates to avoid the upcoming increases, while others are exploring alternatives such as Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass, which currently costs around ₺2,500 per year for its Ultimate tier.
Despite the rising costs, Sony maintains that the changes are necessary to uphold the quality of its service. "With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets," the company explained.
