Sons Stand Trial For Allegedly Murdering Their Mothers

Two shocking cases reveal the depths of family tragedy and violence involving the accused sons

Two tragic incidents this week have rocked families and communities, shedding light on the heartbreaking circumstances where some sons are accused of murdering their mothers.

First, the case of Andre Rebelo, 28, hit the courts when his trial commenced for the alleged murder of his mother, Colleen Rebelo. Colleen's lifeless body was discovered on May 25, 2020, at their home in Bicton, Australia. The announcement of her death was chilling, and now two years later, Andre's trial is drawing the public's attention as sordid details of their family life emerge.

The prosecution argues Andre committed the crime to access his mother's life insurance policies, which he allegedly took out just one week prior to her death. These policies, amounting to substantial coverage, fueled suspicions about his motives. The WA Supreme Court has heard testimonies from family members, including Andre's brother Fabian, who recounted the harrowing moment he found their mother under the shower, unresponsive. When Fabian arrived home late to find the shower still running, he called for her but received no answer, leading him to discover her crumpled on the floor.

During his testimony, Fabian described the scene, recalling how he turned off the warm water and noticed his mother’s face and hands turning blue, with visible signs of trauma. He attempted CPR until emergency services arrived, but tragically, they concluded she was beyond help.

Investigators initially deemed Colleen's death non-suspicious, but as they dug more deeply, they found inconsistencies. Constable Shane Greatrex, the responding officer, testified there were no signs of forced entry nor injuries detectable on her body, leading him to classify her death as potentially accidental. Nonetheless, the discovery of Andre's life insurance policies prompted authorities to deepen their investigation.

Meanwhile, the courtroom drama heightened as Andre Rebelo was confronted with various charges, including fraud related to forging his mother's will. The jury has been cautioned not to make assumptions of guilt based solely on these admissions. This trial, expected to last approximately seven weeks, will continue to unravel the complex web of family dynamics and motives behind this tragic event.

Across the country, another haunting case emerged from Florida. Catherine Griffith, 39, was found murdered by her son, 17-year-old Collin, who allegedly stabbed her during what he reported as a physical altercation. Before her death, on social media, Catherine posted poignant lyrics from Taylor Swift’s song, “It’s Time to Go,” which now resonate chillingly with her fate. Hours after this eerie post, police responded to calls from Collin, who indicated he had harmed his mother.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Catherine dead with significant injuries inflicted by the knife wielded by her own child. Eyewitness accounts painted a disturbing picture of the attack, with neighbors recounting how Collin had dragged his mother inside, ignoring her pleas for help.

Collin’s history of violence raises many eyebrows; he had previously been charged with the murder of his father, Charles, allegedly acting out of self-defense, which complicates this current situation and raises concerns about his mental state. No sooner than the aftermath of one tragedy, another unfolded involving Collin, who now faces charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and violation of a no-contact order with his mother.

With investigations still underway, this series of events leaves communities and families grappling with the frightening reality of familial violence, questioning how love can devolve to such catastrophic actions. Grieving family members, friends, and concerned officials are left to deal with complex emotions surrounding these cases, hoping for accountability, healing, and lessons learned to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
