Director Jeff Fowler has shed light on intriguing details surrounding Gerald Robotnik’s remarkable longevity in the newly released film, Sonic 3. During a conversation with Comicbook, he revealed the existence of deleted scenes from the movie, which aim to clarify how Gerald, who is over 100 years old, continues to appear active.
But how is this even possible? The answer lies with the Shadow: Gerald Robotnik’s story is closely tied to chaos energy. Fowler stated, “I think many fans are wondering how this is possible since the story of Shadow, Gerald, and Maria dates back to the early '70s, and then, 50 years later, he’s still around.” This energy connection explains why Gerald’s vitality has seemingly defied the effects of aging.
According to Fowler’s insights, the deleted scenes depicted Gerald experiencing rejuvenation through the same chaos energy negatively affecting his nemesis, Sonic, through his quills. "The idea was to show how this chaos energy had revitalizing effects, and was keeping him alive, somewhat negated the impacts of time,” he explained.
There were specific scenes filmed showing Gerald encountering the chaos energy’s effects, which included him witnessing the gradual softening and retreating of his wrinkles. “Visually, this would tell the story of how he managed to freeze time to the extent he did,” Fowler elaborated.
Despite this intriguing backstory, time constraints and the film's complex character dynamics led to the unfortunate exclusion of these scenes. Fowler noted, “The film is already so packed with characters and plots; anything deemed non-essential had to be cut for the sake of pacing.”
