Songkran Festival Sparks Demand For Water Guns

As the Thai New Year approaches, vendors report rising popularity of electric water guns and other festive products.

The Songkran festival, celebrated annually in Thailand, is not just a time for family reunions but also a vibrant marketplace for various goods that enhance the festivities. This year, as the festival approaches, vendors at Sam Peng Market have reported a surge in demand for water guns and other water-splashing equipment, essential for the traditional water fights that characterize the holiday.

According to local reports, the trend this year has seen electric water guns gaining immense popularity among festival-goers. These innovative devices allow users to spray water without manual pumping, making them a convenient choice for those looking to enjoy the festivities without the physical exertion of traditional water guns. Prices for these electric water guns range from 280 to 500 baht, depending on the features and convenience they offer.

Market vendors have noted that while electric water guns are flying off the shelves, traditional refillable water guns are also selling well, indicating a diverse consumer preference. Many shoppers still appreciate the classic designs, which remain a staple in the Songkran celebrations. Despite the popularity of these products, some vendors expressed concerns about lower foot traffic at the market compared to previous years.

"The market seems quieter this year," one vendor commented. "Many businesses have opted to set up shop directly at festival locations, which has reduced the number of customers coming to Sam Peng Market. However, electric water guns are definitely in demand, and people are excited to use them during Songkran."

In addition to water guns, the market is also filled with a variety of other Songkran-related products, including flower garlands, waterproof bags for mobile phones, and traditional floral-patterned shirts. The festive atmosphere is palpable, with families preparing to celebrate the Thai New Year with joy and enthusiasm.

On another note, the Social Security Office (SPS) is also making headlines this April. On April 15, 2025, spokesperson Niyada Seniya-Manomai announced the launch of a public survey aimed at gathering opinions on the creation of a social security calendar. The survey, which runs from April 1 to April 30, is designed to engage insured individuals across the country.

The SPS has made it easy for participants to take part in the survey through various channels, including an online Google Form and in-person assistance at local offices. This initiative aims to ensure that the voices of the insured are heard and considered in the development of the calendar, which is intended to be distributed widely.

Niyada emphasized the importance of this survey during a press briefing, stating, "We want to make sure that as many people as possible can share their thoughts. By using both online and offline methods, we hope to reach a diverse audience." The SPS is actively collaborating with various organizations to promote the survey, including human resources departments in companies and local establishments.

As of now, the SPS has reported that they are on track to meet their sample size goals for the survey. In smaller provinces, gathering over 100 responses is considered sufficient to ensure reliable statistical outcomes. Niyada noted, "Even if some areas exceed their target responses, we will keep the survey open until April 30 to maximize participation."

Furthermore, the SPS is prepared to respond to the results of the survey. If the majority of participants express a desire for a social security calendar, the office plans to move forward with its production, as budgetary provisions have already been made. However, the office is currently delaying the procurement process for printing until all survey responses are collected and analyzed.

In a related development, a recent survey conducted by Nida Poll has revealed shifting perspectives among senior citizens regarding retirement age. The survey indicates that a significant 57.71% of seniors support raising the retirement age from 60 to 65 years. This reflects a broader trend where older adults are eager to remain active and contribute to society.

The reasons behind this support are varied. A striking 79.50% of respondents believe they are still healthy enough to work and contribute meaningfully to the economy. Additionally, 77.12% expressed a desire to continue earning an income, while 36.64% felt that extending their working years would enable them to support their grandchildren.

However, it's noteworthy that 42.29% of seniors opposed the extension, citing health issues and a desire for younger generations to have job opportunities. Many of these respondents emphasized the importance of enjoying a peaceful retirement.

Moreover, the survey revealed that 75% of working seniors hope for improved access to health insurance and better working conditions tailored to their needs. Suggestions included flexible working hours, enhanced training programs for older workers, and a supportive work environment.

These findings underscore a significant shift in how senior citizens view retirement not as an end, but as a new chapter filled with opportunities to stay engaged and productive. If the government considers these insights and implements supportive policies, it could lead to a more vibrant and inclusive society for older adults.

As Thailand gears up for the Songkran festival, the juxtaposition of traditional celebrations with contemporary societal changes highlights the dynamic nature of Thai culture. Whether it's the excitement of water fights or the serious discussions around social security and retirement, the spirit of renewal and community remains at the forefront of the Thai New Year celebrations.
