Songkran Festival Sees Shift In Tourist Preferences

Travelers seek new experiences while embracing traditional celebrations during Thailand's New Year festival.

The Songkran festival, celebrated as Thailand's traditional New Year, is one of the most popular festivals in the country. It marks a time when families reunite, visit temples to make merit, and enjoy the fun of water fights. According to Traveloka, Bangkok continues to hold the title of the most popular destination during this festival, underscoring the city's prominence as a hub for Songkran celebrations. However, there is a noticeable shift in tourist preferences towards new destinations such as Chumphon, Nakhon Phanom, and Loei, reflecting a desire for more diverse and meaningful experiences during this holiday.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) estimates that the Songkran festival in 2025 will generate approximately 26,564 million baht, supported by an influx of around 476,000 international tourists and 4,418,500 domestic tourists. This revenue is expected to be divided into 7,324 million baht from international visitors and 19,240 million baht from domestic tourists, marking increases of 7% and 9% respectively compared to the previous year.

As the tourism sector begins to recover, Traveloka has revealed the top five destinations favored by Thai tourists. These locations not only offer a variety of experiences, from urban parties to relaxing beach getaways, but they also reflect a trend where travelers prioritize a blend of tradition and leisure during their holidays. The top destinations include:

  • Bangkok: The capital city is set to host grand Songkran events that blend traditional customs with lively water festivities. Key events include the Siam Songkran Music Festival from April 11 to April 14, 2025, and a Water Festival across 12 locations in Bangkok from April 12 to April 15, 2025. Visitors can expect to witness vibrant parades featuring the procession of Buddha statues from five major temples, along with various cultural activities.
  • Chiang Mai: This northern city invites tourists to experience the unique charm of Lanna culture alongside a bustling Songkran atmosphere. The Water War Chiang Mai festival on April 13 at Central Chiang Mai Airport will feature concerts by top Thai artists and numerous cultural activities throughout the Songkran period.
  • Chonburi: Known for its unique Wan Lai Festival, which extends the Songkran celebrations from April 6 to April 20, Chonburi offers grand water festivities, cultural performances, and parades, making it a must-visit for those looking to enjoy an extended Songkran experience.
  • Phuket: This island provides a vibrant beach atmosphere with daytime water events at Patong Beach, Kata Beach, and Karon Beach, along with nighttime parties on Bangla Road. For those seeking a more traditional experience, visitors can participate in merit-making ceremonies at Wat Mongkol Nimit in Old Phuket Town.
  • Hat Yai: This destination is hosting Songkran festivities at Central Festival Hat Yai and Lee Gardens Plaza, where water splashing turns into a lively party featuring parades and musical performances.

Interestingly, the data from Traveloka indicates a growing interest among Thai tourists in less crowded and more unique travel experiences. Searches for destinations like Nakhon Phanom (+95%), Sakon Nakhon (+68%), Loei (+46%), and Nan (+40%) have surged, attracting visitors who seek authentic Songkran experiences intertwined with nature, culture, and local traditions.
