Sohag University Achieves Significant Milestones In Global Rankings

University recognized for its advanced positions across multiple academic disciplines and research indicators.

On March 8, 2025, Dr. Hassan Al-Noamani, the President of Sohag University, announced significant advancements for the university as it achieved improved standings in the prestigious Scimago global ranking for research and academic institutions. The university has successfully positioned itself within the Q2 category overall, reflecting its continuous efforts to boost its profile in scientific research and higher education.

The Scimago ranking, recognized as one of the foremost global assessments of research institutions, placed Sohag University at the 29th position among Egyptian universities and research institutions. Al-Noamani emphasized, “We are proud to see our work recognized on such an esteemed platform, demonstrating our commitment to enhancing our position within higher education and scientific inquiry.”

Remarkably, Sohag University secured high rankings across 15 distinct subjects, showcasing its diversity and depth of research. It claimed the top position for Earth Sciences, second place for Social Sciences, and fifth place for Chemistry. The university also demonstrated strength across various fields such as Medicine, Engineering, and Mathematics, making appearances across 27 sub-disciplines.

Beyond subject-specific achievements, the university's interdisciplinary capabilities were reflected in its overall evaluations. It achieved the 21st position within the scientific research index, the 40th position for innovation, and the 24th place concerning societal impact among Egyptian academic institutions.

Al-Noamani detailed the ranking's reliance on several key metrics: “The Scimago ranking evaluates institutions based on research performance, innovation output, and their societal impact. It highlights the importance of quality research published and its subsequent influence.”

To determine these rankings, the Scimago ranking system utilizes Scopus database criteria, requiring institutions to publish at least 100 research papers annually to qualify. This benchmark ensures only those institutions committed to extensive research are included, highlighting Sohag University’s diligent academic output, which aligns with Egypt's Vision 2030 aimed at improving the overall education system.

Dr. Amr Abdel Hamid, the Director of Scientific Research at Sohag University, provided additional insights on how institutions are assessed within the Scimago framework. He noted, “The composite index is built upon research performance, innovation outputs, and societal contributions measured through the institution's digital presence on the internet.” He added, “The research ranking signifies the volume and quality of the institution’s research outputs.”

“Regarding innovation,” Dr. Abdel Hamid explained, “the metric accounts for the number of patent applications and how often research outputs are referenced.” Lastly, the societal impact ranking evaluates the institution's online footprint – the number of pages and links from social media platforms feeding back to the university.

The announced advancements by Sohag University indicate not just growth but also the strengthening of its academic and research reputation on the national and international stage. Al-Noamani and his team’s dedication to meeting the benchmarks set forth by international assessment bodies suggest the institution's continued commitment to excellence. The Scimago ranking’s reliance on objective criteria emphasizes the underlying effort at Sohag University to demonstrate meaningful contributions to academic dialogue and innovation.

With these advancements, Sohag University seeks to attract more researchers, partners, and students eager to engage with its growing reputation as a center of academic excellence. Al-Noamani concluded, “This achievement is not just metrics; it reflects the dedication of our faculty and students and the support from our administration.”

Indeed, as the academic world becomes increasingly competitive, institutions like Sohag University exemplify the importance of adapting and striving for higher standards through research and education, aiming to take full advantage of opportunities presented within the global academic community.

Moving forward, the university plans to build on these successful outcomes, continuing its commitment to producing impactful research and fostering innovative educational practices. It will be interesting to see how these achievements affect its future rankings as it aligns with national educational goals and enhances its societal contributions.
