São Paulo Civil Defense Issues Alert For Intense Rains

Heavy rainfall expected across multiple regions as cold front approaches

The Civil Defense of São Paulo has issued a warning for intense rains expected to impact various regions across the state from April 3 to April 5, 2025. The alert comes as a cold front from the South of Brazil moves towards the coast, bringing with it significant changes in weather patterns.

According to the Civil Defense, the most severe rainfall is anticipated along the north coast, Baixada Santista, and the Vale do Paraíba. However, areas including the metropolitan region of São Paulo, Vale do Ribeira, and the cities of Sorocaba, Campinas, and Itapeva are also at risk of experiencing heavy downpours.

Weather models indicate that these storms could result in rainfall volumes reaching up to 100 mm within a 24-hour period, particularly in the coastal regions. Wind gusts are forecasted to exceed 40 km/h, raising concerns about flooding, landslides, and other related disruptions.

In response to the impending weather conditions, the Civil Defense has established a Crisis Cabinet that will begin operations at 2 PM on April 3, 2025. This cabinet will consist of representatives from energy and water utilities, as well as public agencies, and will monitor the situation in real time until April 6, 2025. The aim is to coordinate preventive measures and ensure a prompt response to any emergencies that may arise.

As part of the advisory, the Civil Defense has urged residents to exercise caution during this period. They recommend avoiding travel through flooded areas and staying clear of rivers and streams during heavy rainfall. Additionally, people are advised against seeking shelter under trees or metal structures during storms due to the risk of lightning strikes. In cases of strong winds, it is also advised to maintain distance from windows and objects that could become projectiles.

Residents living in areas prone to landslides are particularly urged to be vigilant. Signs such as cracks in the ground or tilting trees and poles should be taken seriously. If any indications of landslides are observed, individuals should seek safe shelter immediately.

As the cold front approaches, the weather in Greater São Paulo is expected to start with a mix of sun and clouds, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 28°C. However, as the front moves in, conditions will shift, leading to moderate to heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms.

The Civil Defense has emphasized the importance of staying informed through official channels, as updates and recommendations will be provided to help mitigate the impact of the storms on the population. Monitoring the situation closely will be crucial for ensuring the safety of residents in affected areas.

With these preparations in place, the authorities are hopeful that they can effectively manage the challenges posed by the upcoming weather system. The collaboration between various agencies will play a vital role in safeguarding lives and property during this period of adverse weather.

As São Paulo braces for these intense rains, the community is reminded to remain alert and proactive in following safety guidelines to navigate the potential hazards posed by the storms.
