Snow And Winter Conditions Return To France

After weeks of spring-like warmth, the country braces for heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures.

After basking in unseasonably warm temperatures during the first week of March 2025, France is now facing a sharp and dramatic drop as cold winter weather returns. On March 11, the pleasant spring-like air made way for frigid conditions, leading Météo France to issue multiple alerts for snow and ice, particularly across the northern regions of the country.

Weather forecasts indicate the northeastern regions of France could see the return of snow on March 13, with projections estimating up to three centimeters accumulating on the ground. Meteorologist Yann Amice explained the situation, stating, "A descent of polar maritime cold air" has been responsible for this sudden chilling, set to take place overnight from March 12 to March 13.

Alerts for snow and potential avalanches have been raised, especially for the departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle, Moselle, Bas-Rhin, as well as Haute-Marne, Meuse, and Vosges. Snow might even be spotted as far away as the heights of Normandy and parts of Brittany, where early morning temperatures are expected to hover around 0°C. Amice discussed how the transition to winter conditions means the public should expect tricky circumstances on the roads.

It’s astonishing how quickly temperatures have shifted; just this past weekend, Paris experienced its warmest March days on record, surpassing 18 °C and marking the earliest date for such warmth since records began at the Montsouris station in 1873. Similarly, Lille recorded two consecutive days near 20 °C—nearly 9 degrees above seasonal averages.

For the northern half of the country, what initially started as delightful spring weather has dramatically altered, with temperature drops exceeding 10° since Tuesday. Morning frosts are anticipated to become common, especially by the weekend.

The forecast remains chilling as the meteorological drama doesn’t end with just cold air descending; Storm Konrad is set to make landfall primarily across southern France and will also impact neighboring Spain and Portugal. This system is responsible for anticipated heavy rain and thunderstorms, expecting “a lot of snow in the mountains” according to reports.

While the cold air dominates the northern regions, Metéo France has indicated the system will bring rainfall and even snow showers at low altitudes farther south, where conditions are already grim after previous storms. "Wednesday and Thursday, we should rarely exceed 10 °C," warns Météo France.

Despite the current chill and unpredictability of March weather, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Météo France forecasts returning mildness by March 18, signaling the potential return of warmth and sunshine. “The softness should return,” predicts Amice.

The ever-changing weather patterns are causing considerable concern, particularly for those on the roads. The icy conditions could prove hazardous, prompting travelers to heed warnings and drive with extra caution. "La neige fera également son apparition en plaine," as stated by Météo France, adding to the challenges expected during this transitional period.

With significant snowfall expected above 1400 meters, forecasting up to 30 cm, mountain regions may experience enhanced avalanche risks as the region braces for the cold front pushing through the country. With numerous regions under alert, the public is relentlessly reminded to remain vigilant and prepared.

While many are surrendering their summer jackets for cozy winter attire again, others are reminded of the old saying: March is synonymous with unpredictable weather. The drop is not just limited to temperature; it feels monumental for those celebrating the sunny days just gone.
