SNL Kicks Off Its Historic 50th Season With A Star-Studded Lineup

When the iconic sketch show Saturday Night Live (SNL) makes its highly anticipated return for its 50th season this September, fans are brimming with excitement about what lies ahead. Not only is this landmark season extra special because of its rich history, but it also coincides with the 2024 Presidential election—a perfect backdrop for the show's trademark political satire.

On September 28, comedian and actress Jean Smart will kick off the season as the host, joined by musical guest Jelly Roll. This choice to feature Smart is fitting, as her work on Hacks and numerous acclaimed shows has made her one of the television stars of the moment. The premiere is set to deliver some laughs and likely touch on current events, echoing the show's long-standing engagement with the world around it.

Following Smart, the schedule already hints at more notable appearances, with comedian Nate Bargatze set to host on October 5, and the following week, pop superstar Ariana Grande will take the stage. Grande’s presence positions her as one of the most sought-after musical guests, sure to draw attention from both SNL veterans and new viewers alike. Her episode will feature the legendary Stevie Nicks, making it undeniably one to watch.

Also trending high on the schedule is none other than Hollywood favorite Michael Keaton to host the show on October 19, accompanied by musical guest Billie Eilish. Both Keaton and Eilish have cultivated vast followings, which will no doubt bring renewed interest as SNL dives deep headfirst with comedic takes on mega-political events.

To round up this star-studded lineup, beloved SNL alum John Mulaney is slated to return on November 2, the very weekend preceding the election, and will be joined by breakout star Chappell Roan as the musical guest. Mulaney's previous episodes have left audiences wanting more, making this appearance highly anticipated.

But it wouldn't be SNL without some political impersonation. The show plans to bring back familiar characters played by fan-favorites, including Maya Rudolph reprising her role as Vice President Kamala Harris, taking center stage following Harris’s recent announcement to run for President. Rudolph's impersonation has garnered much love and praise over the years and will surely provide some entertaining moments during the upcoming election.

Lorne Michaels, SNL's longtime executive producer, has hinted at updates and reinventions to the show's approach, especially concerning political satire—namely how they portray Donald Trump. The show is known for adapting its satire to fit the current political environment, and Michaels acknowledged the need to find new angles for their Trump representation this season. According to him, the character has “morphed,” and SNL must stay current and relevant.

While current cast member James Austin Johnson has been performing as Trump—bringing both comedy and commentary to his portrayal—the shift indicates SNL’s commitment to keeping its humor fresh.

This season’s premiere is also set to welcome special guest invited players, ensuring there will be surprises along the way. Guest stars on SNL have historically added layers of excitement and unpredictability to the show, and this season promises to deliver on those fronts. Rumors of additional surprises and cameos always circle around SNL, especially when election cycles come around.

But the excitement doesn’t end there. A celebrated live primetime special commemorative of the 50th anniversary is set to air next year, on February 16, 2025, reflecting on SNL's countless memorable moments. This is alongside plans for the theatrical release of the movie titled Saturday Night, which artfully depicts the chaos surrounding the show's first-ever episode, slated for nationwide launch next month.

Already, fans are reminiscing about their favorite sketches and characters from SNL's vault, anticipating which iconic moments or new comedy bits might emerge this season. One of the most fascinating aspects of SNL has always been its ability to blend entertainment and relevance—prompting laughter during some of the most serious times.

The impending election adds another layer to the already exhilarating prospect of the show. SNL has historically seen its ratings soar during election years, making it even more significant for fans as they tune in weekly to catch the latest updates and humorous takes on various candidates.

It hasn’t just been about politics. SNL maintains its ability to shine through pop culture references, celebrity cameos, and hilarious sketches centered around relatable or absurd themes. Audiences cherish the comforting familiarity of their Saturday night ritual, enjoying everything from musical moments to the comedic brilliance of its cast.

So, as SNL gears up to celebrate its milestone anniversary, there’s plenty to look forward to: rich humor, outstanding hosts, and the much-anticipated political commentary. The show promises fans both new and old will find something to laugh about, whether it’s through sketches poking fun at current events, characters beloved and new, or the very essence of Saturday nights.
