SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Slippery Rock University continues to make waves both academically and athletically, with recent achievements showcasing the exceptional talent and dedication of its student-athletes. From academic honors to impressive sports performances, The Rock is making its presence felt this season.
The volleyball team saw four of its standout players honored on the prestigious 2024 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. Kate Lachendro-Biery, Erica Selfridge, Lauren VonderHaar, and Jaeden Yost represented the team, demonstrating not only their prowess on the court but also their commitment to excellence in the classroom. To qualify for the CSC Academic All-District recognition, student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA above 3.50 and have significant contributions to their team, either through participation in 90 percent of matches or starting 66 percent of them. The announcement highlights the immense dedication of these athletes, with Selfridge and Yost both boasting perfect 4.00 GPAS, Lachendro-Biery holding 3.93, and VonderHaar at 3.71.
Selfridge's outstanding senior season culminated with her earning her third All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division honor, where she recorded 312 kills and was integral to her team's strategies. Notably, she leaves Slippery Rock ranked ninth all-time for career kills with 1,166. Lachendro-Biery finished her illustrious career as the most statistically impressive libero for The Rock, boasting the record for career digs with 2,157, ranking her 13th highest in PSAC history. Both players have set high standards for future athletes to aspire to.
Meanwhile, the Slippery Rock football team demonstrated tenacity and skill by making it to the NCAA Division II Semifinals against No. 2 Ferris State. The game hosted at Top Taggart Field was intense, with Slippery Rock leading for more than three quarters before succumbing to the powerful Bulldogs, resulting in a 48-38 loss. A season record of 12-2, the second-best in the program's history, was achieved through fierce competition and teamwork. Senior quarterback Brayden Long ended his career with impressive stats, ranking first all-time for completions at SRU.
The Rock's dominance was evident early on when they led 38-27 at halftime but struggled with turnovers, costing them points on drives. Long connected with Logan Ramper three times for touchdowns, including one for 60 yards on the opening drive, showcasing the team's explosive potential. Despite the heart-wrenching defeat, the performance served as proof of Slippery Rock's competitive spirit.
Turning to wrestling, the Slippery Rock team faced off against Mercer, achieving a solid 36-24 victory. Under the leadership of coach Denton Zeronas, the team showcased their strength and skill, securing early pins and preventing forfeits. The dual started strong, with middle-weight wrestlers Aiden Shay and Sam Caton demonstrating their skill by achieving first-period pins to build an early lead. Fans were treated to thrilling matches, including the tightly contested face-off between Aiden Ward and Mercer’s Deacon Campbell, which ended with Ward narrowly claiming victory after three intense overtime periods.
Adding to the commendable achievements across athletics, Slippery Rock’s track and field standout Logan Anderson has been recognized with the PSAC’s indoor track and field freshman of the week honor after winning the heptathlon. He amassed 4,922 points at the Susquehanna Early Season Multi, showcasing his potential for future competitions as he secured NCAA provisional marks.
