Sinner Returns As Italy Hosts Record 23 Players

The Internazionali BNL d'Italia prepares for historic attendance and thrilling matches

As the tennis world gears up for the 2025 edition of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia, excitement is palpable in Rome. Set to unfold from May 7 to May 18, this prestigious tournament promises to be historic, featuring a record 23 Italian players competing across both the men's and women's draws. With Jannik Sinner, the world number one, making his anticipated return following a suspension, the stakes are higher than ever.

The tournament will take place at the iconic Foro Italico, which has undergone significant expansions to accommodate the growing number of fans and players. The venue now spans 20 hectares, doubling its previous size, and increasing its capacity from 33,000 to 55,000 spectators. This expansion includes 34,500 seats, 7,500 more than in 2024, along with enhanced food and beverage areas, making it a more vibrant place for tennis enthusiasts.

Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, has projected an impressive economic impact, estimating that the event could attract around 400,000 paying spectators, potentially surpassing the €615 million generated in 2024. “In the next two to three years, we could see this figure reach a billion euros,” Binaghi stated, emphasizing the tournament's growing significance in the sports calendar.

Among the Italian contingent, Sinner leads the charge, having previously reached the quarter-finals in 2022. His return to the court comes after a three-month suspension, which he handled with resilience. “The first games will not be easy. I hope to find my rhythm quickly,” Sinner remarked, showcasing his determination to perform well despite the layoff. He has been training intensively with his coaches and friends, preparing for what he hopes will be a triumphant comeback.

Joining Sinner are notable players such as Lorenzo Musetti, currently ranked 11th in the ATP standings, and Matteo Berrettini, who is still a fan favorite despite doubts surrounding his fitness. Berrettini, ranked 31st, is recovering from a physical issue that forced him to withdraw from a recent tournament. His participation in Rome remains uncertain, but his presence would undoubtedly boost the home crowd's spirits.

Other Italian players to watch include Flavio Cobolli, who is ranked 36th and reached the second round last year, and Lorenzo Sonego, who made it to the semifinals in 2021. Matteo Arnaldi, Luciano Darderi, and Mattia Bellucci are also set to compete, with Bellucci making his debut in the main draw. The excitement doesn’t stop there, as the tournament will also see the inclusion of several wild cards, including the experienced Fabio Fognini and rising star Matteo Gigante.

On the women's side, Jasmine Paolini leads the charge, ranked 6th in the WTA standings. Despite her best results being second-round finishes, she remains a formidable competitor. Other notable Italian women include Lucia Bronzetti and Elisabetta Cocciaretto, both looking to make their mark in the tournament. The women's draw will also feature five wild cards, including the seasoned Sara Errani, who reached the finals in 2015 and is eager to make a memorable return.

Fans will be able to follow the action live, with Sky Sport broadcasting the tournament in full and Rai airing one match per day. Additionally, the matches will be available for streaming on NOW, allowing tennis lovers to catch every moment of the competition. The tournament's reach extends beyond the court, with efforts to increase the visibility of tennis on television, including negotiations for the exclusive airing of the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup on SuperTennis.

The tournament kicks off with qualifying rounds on May 5 and 6, leading into the first rounds of the men's and women's singles. The anticipation builds as players prepare to compete for one of the most coveted titles in tennis just weeks before the French Open. The finals are set for May 18, promising a thrilling conclusion to what is expected to be a groundbreaking event.

In addition to the main tournament, a special tennis court has been inaugurated in Piazza del Popolo, allowing fans to enjoy free pre-qualification matches. This initiative aims to bring tennis closer to the public, with exhibitions and training sessions featuring top players throughout the tournament. The court's location highlights the event's commitment to making tennis accessible and engaging for everyone.

As the countdown to the Internazionali BNL d'Italia begins, the atmosphere in Rome is electric. With a lineup of talented players, a revamped venue, and a commitment to community engagement, this year's tournament is set to be a landmark event in the world of tennis. Fans, players, and officials alike are ready to witness the magic of tennis unfold at the Foro Italico, where history is made on the clay courts.
