Egyptian officials have reported a tragic incident involving the sinking of a tourist yacht, resulting in at least 17 people missing. The yacht, named Sea Story, sank off the coast of the Red Sea near the coastal town of Marsa Alam following severe weather warnings about high waves and turbulence.
The governor of the Red Sea region, Amr Hanafy, stated on Monday morning, "A distress signal was received at 05:30 (03:30 GMT) from the yacht, which had set sail on Saturday for what was intended to be a five-day excursion with 31 tourists and 14 crew members aboard." This severe weather warning had been issued the previous day, advising against any marine activities.
The Egyptian military, along with local authorities, swiftly coordinated rescue operations, leading to the successful retrieval of 28 individuals from the water. Some of these rescued persons have been airlifted to local hospitals for medical treatment. Two of the individuals rescued were reported to be critically injured but are now said to be stable.
Among those aboard were tourists from various countries, including Spain, Germany, the UK, and the United States. Reports indicate the possibility of British nationals among those unaccounted for. The UK Foreign Office is actively providing consular assistance to affected families and is working closely with Egyptian authorities to ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
"We are receiving devastating news," said one British representative, as efforts continue to trace those still missing. The yacht's operator, Dive Pro Liveaboard, based near Hurghada, has not commented on the incident as they reportedly have no current information.
The Sea Story was described online as being newly built, having entered service only this year, and is capable of accommodating up to 36 passengers. It features four decks and numerous amenities, catering predominantly to divers exploring the Red Sea's renowned coral reefs.
According to the Egyptian Meteorological Authority, wind speeds reached up to 60-70 km/h, with wave heights between three and four meters, creating hazardous conditions for maritime travel. Governor Hanafy noted, "Intensive search operations are underway, with the navy and armed forces participating actively to locate the missing individuals."
The area surrounding Marsa Alam is known for its popular tourist destinations, especially among those interested in marine and underwater activities. The departure port is a well-trodden hub for adventure seekers eager to explore the underwater life offered by the Red Sea.
While the cause of the sinking remains indeterminate, this incident echoes previous warnings about potential dangers posed by maritime activities during adverse weather conditions. The Egyptian Meteorological Authority had forecasted turbulent conditions for the weekend leading up to the tragedy, emphasizing caution.
This tragedy has raised concerns, as several tourist companies previously restricted their operations following heightened geopolitical tensions affecting the region. Tourists' safety has been prioritized, and many firms have faced increased scrutiny concerning their safety protocols and operational guidelines.
Travelers planning trips to the area are advised to stay informed about local conditions and heed travel warnings. The Egyptian military is committed to ensuring safety measures are observed, with comprehensive assistance provided to search and rescue operations following this incident.
Authorities remain hopeful about resolving the situation and extending support to the families affected by this shocking event.
