SINGAPORE, 21 DECEMBER 2024 – The Singapore Men’s National Team edged closer to the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ glory after securing their spot in the semi-finals by drawing 0-0 against traditional rivals Malaysia at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil, on December 20, 2024. The tense match before 31,127 passionate supporters confirmed Singapore’s place as Group A runners-up, allowing them to advance alongside the formidable defending champions, Thailand.
With the atmosphere electric at Bukit Jalil, Singapore executed their tactical defense against Malaysia, who desperately needed a victory to advance. The Lions managed to accumulate seven points over their four matches, finishing behind Thailand, who topped the group with perfect points. Thailand’s impressive trio of wins ensured they headed the group, including their latest 3-2 victory over Cambodia, solidifying their place for the semi-finals.
“We knew the game was going to be hard and it became even harder as each minute went by,” reflected Singapore defender Safuwan Baharudin, capturing the mounting pressure faced by the team as the match progressed. “At the end of the day we got the job done. It’s always hard to come to Bukit Jalil. We all did our best and tried to do what we could do, but we’re through.”
Malaysia, controlled by coach Pau Marti Vicente, delivered a spirited performance throughout the match. Their strategy revolved around aggressive offensive plays aimed toward the Singaporean goal. If fortune had favored them, they could’ve found the pivotal breakthrough. The Harimau Malaya side saw two key opportunities slip through their fingers: Stuart Wilkin's miss from close range and Muhammad Haqimi Azim Rosli's effort saved by Singapore's stalwart goalkeeper, Mohamad Izwan Mahbud.
The second half bore witness to Malaysia ramping up their attempts to find the back of the net. A thunderous shot by Endrick Dos Santos grazed past the post, leaving fans unsettled. Later, Malaysia's substitute Paulo Josue rattled the crossbar with his header, following another near-miss from Harith Haiqal Adam Afkar.
Despite Malaysia’s freedom of movement and attempts to capitalize on errors, Singapore’s defense stood firm. The Lions effectively weathered the storm, successfully repelling numerous attempts from their opponents. Mohamed Haziq Nadzli, already established as the national team's last line of defense, emerged as the hero, showcasing remarkable saves against Singapore's late efforts to find the winning goal.
With the match moving toward its conclusion, Malaysia’s hopes of clinching the desired win faded within grasp as the final whistle confirmed the goalless deadlock. This result marked the end of Vicente's tenure as Malaysia's coach, as he had revealed his intention to leave following the conclusion of the ASEAN Cup.
Thailand, who has captured the ASEAN Cup title seven times previously, led the group with 12 points, solidifying their status as the tournament favorites. Meanwhile, Singapore, after weathering through challenging matches—including their opening victory against Cambodia and losing to Thailand—managed to maintain their group competitiveness.
Looking forward, the Lions will face the Group B winners, gearing up for their semi-final match scheduled on December 26 at Jalan Besar Stadium. The football community buzzes with excitement over ticket sales, set to begin on December 22. Tickets will provide access to the home advantage for local fans eager to support the national team.
With tickets starting from S$24, the Football Association of Singapore is committed to ensuring local fans fill the stands, displaying their vibrant spirit amid the intense competition. The move also includes measures to make sure they manage sales effectively, enhancing fan engagement.
This strategic decision also involves having all tickets sold exclusively at the stadium to prioritize Singaporean supporters. Hariss Harun and his teammates will look to leverage the home crowd’s support to push themselves to victory as they continue their quest for the coveted ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup title.
