Simon Ammann Withdraws From Four Hills Tournament

The veteran ski jumper opts for training after disappointing qualification results

Simon Ammann has officially withdrawn from the prestigious Four Hills Tournament after his subpar performance led to his failure to qualify for the opening event held in Oberstdorf, Germany. The announcement, made by the Swiss ski federation, Swiss-Ski, on December 31, 2023, marks the end of Ammann's 26th participation in this renowned ski jumping event.

The 43-year-old veteran from Toggenburg faced an uphill battle right from the qualification round, finishing at the bottom with only the 51st place, which left him short of advancing. This disappointing outcome is especially poignant, as Oberstdorf is notable for being the place where Ammann made his World Cup debut 27 years ago. "He only finished 51st in Oberstdorf, where he made his World Cup debut 27 years ago," stated the Swiss-Ski announcement.

Faced with this setback, the four-time Olympic champion has decided to take decisive action. Rather than continue with the tour’s subsequent competitions, which include prestigious events set for January 1 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, January 4 in Innsbruck, and concluding on January 6 in Bischofshofen, Ammann will focus on training. Reportedly, this decision was made after extensive discussions with his coaching team, who collectively agreed on prioritizing Ammann's development and future prospects over the tour's immediate challenges.

Reflecting on the current season, Ammann's performance has been less than satisfactory, with only two successful entries out of ten World Cup competitions where he managed to reach the finals, both resulting in 30th-place finishes. This season has been fraught with difficulties for the veteran athlete, evidenced by his struggles during his home World Cup event last weekend at Engelberg, where he also failed to qualify. The cumulative frustrations from these experiences evidently contributed to his choice to withdraw.

Swiss-Ski confirmed the withdrawal, stating, "The four-time Olympic champion has decided to focus on training," indicating clear intentions to regroup and refine his skills. Given the historical significance of Ammann's illustrious career, marked by numerous accolades including Olympic gold medals, his withdrawal suggests both acknowledgment of his current challenges and commitment to returning stronger.

Meanwhile, other competitors from the Swiss team, including promising talent Gregor Deschwanden, along with Killian Peier and Felix Trunz, are set to participate actively. This ensemble will hope to represent Switzerland well, but there will be no immediate replacement for Ammann as he opts for this training block to target improvement.

Despite the setback this year’s Four Hills Tournament brought to Ammann, there remains hope for resurgence. With dedicated training and experience under his belt, the ski jumping community eagerly awaits his future performances and potential comeback. Whether this temporary halt will translate to gains later on remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Simon Ammann’s dedication and past achievements inspire young athletes and veteran competitors alike.

While the spotlight turns to the remaining Swiss ski jumpers, the absence of Ammann—a well-respected figure in winter sports—will undoubtedly be felt within both the team and the tournament. Nevertheless, all eyes are now on future events as Ammann aims to sharpen his skills for what lies ahead.
