DAR ES SALAAM: Simba SC and Azam FC are set to clash today at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium for what promises to be an intense Mainland Premier League derby.
With kick-off scheduled for 7:00 PM East African Time, both teams come with substantial ambitions, especially as they vie for the league title. Simba, under the guidance of head coach Fadlu Davids, has shown formidable momentum this season, currently sitting second on the league standings with 50 points from 19 matches. Their impressive record includes 16 wins, 2 draws, and only 1 loss, demonstrating their consistency and hunger for glory.
“This match against Azam FC is pivotal for our title ambitions. A victory will bring us one step closer to our goal,” Davids stated confidently before the game. He elaborated on the preparation, emphasizing the need for his players to step up psychologically. “We know it’s a big game,” he continued. “There are many emotions involved, and besides the tactical aspect and physical aspects, the psychological element plays a huge role.”
Simba's remarkable success this season can be attributed to their solid defense, as they have conceded fewer goals than any other team in the league. Their attacking lineup, spearheaded by Jean Charles Ahoua and Leonel Ateba, boasts 18 league goals between them, enhancing their chances against Azam, who are currently third with 43 points from 20 matches.
Despite their recent form, Azam FC has encountered challenges, marked by a draw and a loss over their last three games, creating urgency for them to recover and maintain title hopes. Coach Rachid Taoussi acknowledged this shift, stating, “Preparation must be different when you’re up against a team like Simba. There needs to be balance between attacking and defending.”
Taoussi also shared insights on Azam’s strategic approach, highlighting their plans to replicate the successful tactics employed during their previous match against Yanga, where they secured a 1-0 victory. “We will stick to the strategy...because we believe it will help us create enough chances to take revenge against Simba,” he declared.
The historical significance of this derby cannot be ignored. Simba has had recent success against Azam, winning the last three encounters. This gives them not only confidence but also adds pressure on Azam as they seek to turn the tide. Taoussi expressed respect for Simba, acknowledging Davids’ achievement with the team. “It is very well-coached, organized defensively,” he noted.
Both coaches have underscored the importance of tactical adjustments for their respective squads. Davids welcomed the move to Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, citing the benefits of the pitch compared to Azam’s home ground, allowing greater space for tactical execution. “Playing on natural grass versus artificial changes the dynamics,” Davids pointed out. “It makes it easier for us to utilize the width of the field, creating opportunities for the fans.”
Regardless of their current challenges, Azam still boasts dangerous players who can disrupt Simba’s plans. Djibril Sillah leads their scoring with five goals, backed by additional scoring threats from teammates Ausa, who are all capable of taking the game to Simba.
This match promises to be closely contested, adding layers of excitement for fans and significant consequences for the league standings. With both teams having much at stake, the action at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium will showcase the best of Tanzanian football.
After this match, Simba will travel to face Coastal Union on March 1 and prepare for the derby against their arch-rivals, Young Africans, on March 8, ensuring the schedule remains packed with high-stakes competition.
