Pont-Saint-Martin, Italy witnessed the crowning of Silvia Balagna as the Ninfa del Lys during the 115th edition of its historic carnival, bringing excitement and joy to the locals. The announcement of her role lit up the stage, imbued with azure hues and heartfelt cheers, as Balagna, flanked by her ancelles, received warm applause from hundreds gathered at the square on the evening of March 1, 2025.

Silvia Balagna, who previously served as one of the ancelles alongside her sister Elisa back in 2013, returns as the Nymph celebrating the legends inherent to her hometown. Accompanying her as ancelles are Monica Consol and Veronica Dalbard, both enthusiastic primary school teachers originating from the town’s Fundus Tauri district. Their participation reinforces the rich cultural heritage emphasized at the carnival.

This year’s carnival showcases over 50 characters rooted deeply within local folklore, featuring Davide Patuzzo as the Devil and Alessandro Stevenin portraying San Martino, all guided by the experienced ceremonies of Andrea Caielli, who has hosted the event for the past three years. The narrative imbues itself with magical elements from the legend of the Fata di Colombera and traditions stretching back to the Roman era.

During the ceremony, the character of the Console of the Roman Republic, portrayed by Roberto Peretto, stood tall among the prominent figures. Peers such as the tribune of the plebe, Sebastiano Sucquet, and leaders of the Roman guards also contributed to the reenactment of history on the town’s streets. Among the colorful gathering are the Roman maidens and soldiers, who together create engaging spectacles representing the town’s vibrant past.

Additions to this year's festivities include groundbreaking performances featuring drones, presented by the Pyrolights drones team. For the first time, audiences will experience aerial displays slated to occur during the ceremonial burning of the Devil effigy, showcasing over 400 illuminated drones against the night sky on March 4.

The carnival celebrations are set to continue with vibrant cultural expressions on March 2. Festivities kick off with the float parade starting at 9:30 AM, where folkloric groups will fill the streets of Pont-Saint-Martin. Audiences are also expected to enjoy musical performances led by local bands from Pont-Saint-Martin and Issime, alongside traditional instruments like bagpipes and drums from Andrate and Arnad.

On the same day, at 2:30 PM, there will be another parade filled with masked participants, marching alongside historical figures and celebrating with vibrant music from the town's bands and assorted performances, representing the spirit of togetherness and community joy.

The following day, March 3, will see the participation of historical characters at the Municipality, followed by traditions including the fagiolata (bean dish), the chariot race, and the Roman relay. This day becomes particularly special as the community gathers to witness the awarding of local winners alongside honorary mentions at the historical events hosted.

Closure of the festivities on March 4 and 5: The final stretch of the carnival culminates on March 4, featuring the grand parade of allegorical floats commencing at 2:30 PM. Right after sunset, the historical burning of the Devil will be accompanied by dazzling piromusical displays, presenting the dual performance of lights and fireworks with the innovation provided by drone technology.
