Sicilian Government Launches 30 Million Euro Poverty Income Initiative

Thousands of families benefit while many remain excluded due to funding limits

On May 6, 2025, the provisional list of beneficiaries for the solidarity contribution, commonly referred to as the 'poverty income', was officially published. This initiative, which allocates a total of 30 million euros, is promoted by the Schifani government and managed by Irfis, the financial institution responsible for overseeing the distribution of these funds.

The one-time contribution aims to support Sicilian families facing economic and social hardship. Applications for the aid were collected through an online platform that was active from February 25 to April 15. The response was significant, with over 8,300 applications submitted, highlighting the pressing need for financial assistance among the population.

Out of these applications, 6,893 have been deemed eligible for funding, with each family potentially receiving up to a maximum of 5,000 euros. The distribution of these funds is based on various economic and social parameters, ensuring that those in the most need receive the assistance first. Special attention has been given to families with minors, single-parent households, and those with individuals in particularly vulnerable situations.

Despite the positive news for many, there remains a significant concern as an additional 1,418 applications, which met the minimum eligibility score of 25 points, were excluded from funding due to a lack of available resources. The regional government has recognized this issue and is actively seeking additional funds, approximately 1.5 million euros, to help cover these unmet requests.

Renato Schifani, the President of the Region, expressed confidence in Irfis’s capabilities, stating, "Once again, Irfis has proven to be an effective and timely tool for the service of Sicily. The speed with which the list has been processed demonstrates our determination to provide concrete support to families in difficulty. It is our duty to ensure that no one is left behind, especially during such a complex period for many social realities in our territory." This sentiment underscores the urgency and importance of the initiative.

As the provisional list of beneficiaries is now available, families can consult it directly on the Irfis website, where they can also find the list of excluded applications. This transparency is crucial, allowing applicants to understand their status and the reasons behind their acceptance or exclusion.

Furthermore, Iolanda Riolo, the President of Irfis, emphasized the institution's commitment to processing applications swiftly, saying, "We are aware of how important this assistance is for families in difficulty, and that is why we worked to the best of our abilities." This statement reflects the broader commitment of the regional government to address the economic challenges faced by many Sicilian families.

In summary, the solidarity contribution initiative represents a significant step towards alleviating the financial burdens faced by many in Sicily. The government’s pledge to seek additional funding to cover those left out of the current round of aid further demonstrates their commitment to supporting the most vulnerable in society.

As the situation develops, it will be essential for the regional government and Irfis to continue their efforts in not only providing immediate relief but also in addressing the underlying economic issues that lead to such widespread hardship. The success of this initiative could pave the way for future programs aimed at combating poverty and promoting social equity across the region.
