Sibiu Police Intensify Safety Measures For Palm Sunday

Authorities focus on road safety and public order during festive celebrations this weekend.

As the weekend of April 11-13, 2025, approaches, police forces in Sibiu are ramping up their efforts to ensure road safety and public order during the Palm Sunday celebrations. This initiative comes as part of a broader campaign aimed at preventing road accidents and maintaining a safe environment for the public.

From Friday through Sunday, the Sibiu County Police Inspectorate, alongside various specialized units, will be actively engaged in awareness and enforcement actions across all categories of roads. The primary focus is to curb speeding, ensure compliance with traffic regulations, and prevent driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances.

Elena Welter, spokesperson for the IPJ Sibiu, emphasized the importance of these measures, stating, "In the midst of the ROADPOL SPEED campaign, traffic police are operating on all road categories, both inside and outside localities, using speed measurement and recording devices, as well as devices for detecting alcohol and psychoactive substance consumption." This proactive approach aims to reduce the number of accidents caused by reckless driving behavior.

Welter further advised drivers to be particularly cautious during adverse weather conditions, urging them to reduce speed, increase the distance between vehicles, and ensure their safety before making any directional changes. “In conditions of reduced visibility, wet roads, ice, or precipitation, we recommend that drivers take extra precautions,” she added.

As part of the Palm Sunday celebrations, police will also focus on maintaining public order and safety in areas where large gatherings are expected. This includes not only religious services but also cultural, sports, and recreational events. The police presence will encompass all operational structures, including public order, traffic police, and criminal investigations, ensuring a comprehensive approach to safety.

The police are particularly concerned with preventing violent crimes and protecting property during this busy weekend. They will monitor crowded areas closely to deter potential criminal activity. “We are committed to ensuring that citizens can celebrate this important occasion without fear,” Welter stated.

In addition to traffic enforcement, police will conduct checks on commercial activities to ensure compliance with hygiene and sanitary standards. This is crucial in protecting public health, especially during a time when many will be purchasing food and other goods for the celebrations. Citizens are encouraged to shop only in regulated spaces and to check the expiration dates and quality of products, particularly meat and meat products.

“Make sure that products are sanitary-veterinary approved, properly labeled, and accompanied by certificates of authenticity,” Welter advised. Such diligence is essential to safeguard the health of the community.

As the holiday approaches, the police are also reminding the public to be vigilant and cautious in their interactions. Citizens should avoid sharing personal information about their absence from home on social media, as this can lead to theft and other crimes. “Be prudent when interacting with strangers and keep a close eye on your belongings, especially in crowded public spaces,” Welter warned.

Drivers are urged to adhere strictly to speed limits, signal their intentions well in advance, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Special attention should also be paid to pedestrians, cyclists, and users of scooters and motorcycles, as these groups are particularly vulnerable on the roads.

In case of emergencies, the public is reminded to call 112 if they witness or are aware of any incidents that could harm individuals or property. The police are prepared to respond swiftly to any reported situations, reinforcing their commitment to public safety.

As the Palm Sunday festivities unfold, the police’s comprehensive approach aims not only to ensure road safety but also to foster a secure environment for all participants. With heightened vigilance and community cooperation, the hope is that this weekend will pass without incident, allowing everyone to enjoy the celebrations in peace.

In summary, the Sibiu police are taking significant steps to ensure that the Palm Sunday celebrations are safe and enjoyable for all. Through increased enforcement and public awareness, they aim to prevent accidents and crimes, ensuring a secure environment during this important time.
