PHOENIX — A shooting incident occurred at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Christmas night, sending shockwaves through holiday travelers. Authorities responded swiftly to reports of gunfire around 9:40 p.m. local time, particularly at the busy Terminal 4, which often sees heavy foot traffic during the holiday season.
According to the Phoenix Police Department, officers arrived shortly after receiving alerts about shots fired and discovered three victims: one adult female and two adult males, all suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported the victims to local hospitals for treatment. Police reported the adult female is currently listed in critically unstable condition with life-threatening injuries, whereas the two males are stable.
"Preliminary information suggests a group of known individuals engaged in a physical altercation, which escalated when one subject retrieved a handgun," explained Sergeant Mayra Reeson of the Phoenix Police. "During the incident, four people were injured, and two individuals were detained. All five involved know each other, and fortunately, no other community members or visitors were harmed.”
Witnesses at the scene described a chaotic atmosphere as they observed paramedics treating individuals. Gabriella Uloa, who was at the airport dropping off family members, recounted, "It's frightening because it's the holidays, of course, everyone wants to get home to their families. Listening to kids cry makes it even more tense."
The incident triggered temporary safety protocols, including the closure of the Terminal 4A security checkpoint and the pause of PHX Sky Train operations. Airport representatives confirmed, "The terminal was temporarily closed but all airport operations have returned to normal.” The terminals resumed regular operations as the investigation continued, allowing travelers to proceed with their journeys.
Authorities clarified there was no active shooter situation at the scene. The police department’s Twitter account reassured the public: "The Phoenix Police are investigating the shooting. No suspects are currently being sought after, and airport operations have resumed to normal business.”
Despite the serious nature of the incident, airport operations at Sky Harbor have not been significantly disrupted, and flights have continued to run on schedule. This situation drew immediate attention, especially following several high-profile shootings across the United States this year, reigniting debates on gun control and public safety.
From 12News, it was reported, "Airport officials have urged the public to remain vigilant, especially during this festive season, and to report any suspicious activity.”
Investigators remain on-site to gather additional information and details surrounding the event. "We are committed to determining exactly what led to this incident and ensuring the safety of our airport," said the airport spokesperson.
The investigation is still active, and more updates are expected as authorities look to piece together the details of this unsettling event. Travelers and airport staff reflect on the importance of security during peak travel times, especially with rising concerns over gun violence.
Police say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictability of such events, emphasizing the need for community vigilance as the holiday travel season continues.
