Police continue to investigate the shooting incident at Castleton Square Mall, which took place on the evening of December 24, 2024. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) reported gunshots fired inside the mall around 8:30 p.m., prompting immediate evacuation of the shopping center during one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
According to police, the shooting was linked to a "dispute" among individuals near one of the mall's entrances, particularly close to Kay Jewelers. Initially, police stated there appeared to be no injuries reported, but later developments revealed a man had arrived at Eskenazi Hospital with gunshot wounds believed to have been sustained during the altercation. Fortunately, the man is currently listed as stable.
The incident culminated with the arrest of 18-year-old Aaron McClure, charged preliminarily with felony intimidation with a deadly weapon due to his alleged involvement. IMPD has confirmed they are continuing their investigation to determine the precise circumstances leading up to the shooting.
IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson expressed concern over the incident, particularly considering its timing just before Christmas, saying, "How many families were put at risk... how close it is to the holidays... this cannot continue to happen." Thompson credited the rapid response of off-duty officers on patrol nearby, who were able to reach the scene within seconds, highlighting the importance of police presence during crowded shopping periods.
