Shokz, the specialist in open-ear technology, has made headlines with its announcement of a two-year partnership as the official headphone partner of the TCS London Marathon. This partnership marks the first time Shokz will play such a role at one of the world’s most celebrated races, giving runners the opportunity to enjoy their favorite audio content safely and comfortably as they navigate the course.
The TCS London Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, April 27, 2025, will showcase Shokz’s contributions, particularly through the introduction of a Shokz-themed takeover at Mile 15, located at Westferry Circus. This area will offer runners a unique immersive audio experience featuring specially curated playlists and ambient lighting, creating an atmosphere of celebration and motivation. According to Shokz, participants at this mile marker will be enveloped by sound, enhancing their experience during the world’s most popular marathon.
Daisy Cong, the International Business Director at Shokz, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “The TCS London Marathon is an iconic event in the calendar, and so we’re absolutely thrilled to become their official headphone partner. One recognized race-approved sports headphones, runners can soak up the incredible atmosphere the London Marathon brings, coupled with an unparalleled audio experience, all whilst ensuring their safety.”
Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, also conveyed excitement for the collaboration, noting, “We are very excited to welcome Shokz in this innovative collaboration as the Official Headphone Partner of the TCS London Marathon. Listening to audio—music, radio, or podcasts—is now an integral part of both training and marathon day itself for our participants.”
The inclusion of Shokz’s open-ear technology enhances this experience by allowing marathon runners to listen to their chosen audio content without sacrificing situational awareness and safety, as they can still hear the roaring crowds and the action around them. The new Shokz music tunnel at Mile 15 promises to be one of the highlights of the event.
While the partnership aims to enrich the marathon experience, securing a spot within the event has become increasingly challenging. This year, more than 840,000 people applied to run the TCS London Marathon, with the odds of winning a place sinking to just 6.3%. This figure highlights the race's soaring popularity and the cutthroat competition faced by potential runners.
Statistical trends reveal just how difficult it has become to gain entry to this marathon. The acceptance rate for applicants has significantly decreased from 9.2% last year, where 578,374 people applied. Comparatively, just ten years ago, only 172,888 people applied, leading to 51,696 successful entries—a favorable acceptance rate of 29.9%.
Marc Porcar, CEO of QR Code Generator PRO S.L., reflected on these statistics, stating, “With the number of entrants to the London Marathon, and many other marathons around the world, growing, these will get harder and harder to get. Social media has likely affected its popularity and influenced people to make lifestyle changes to give marathon running a go.”
Interestingly, the analysis of the application rates has led to humorous yet stark comparisons. Research indicates aspiring runners have higher chances of securing tickets to events like Glastonbury (8.4%) or even gaining admission to prestigious institutions like Oxford University (16%) than to the London Marathon itself. On the other end of the spectrum, getting selected for jury service stands at only 40%, presenting yet another quirky juxtaposition of probabilities.
With all these factors at play, the TCS London Marathon is not just about the miles but also about the community it fosters and the aspirations it stimulates. The partnership with Shokz aims to bolster this atmosphere, ensuring runners remain motivated and entertained throughout their unforgettable experience on April 27, 2025. The blend of technology and tradition certainly promises to make this year’s edition one to watch, both for participants and spectators alike.
