Shodoshima Island Embraces Winter Wildlife And Sustainability

From adorable monkey huddles to sustainable tourism awards, island initiatives thrive this season.

Winter has settled over Shodoshima Island, bringing with it not only colder temperatures but also unique wildlife interactions and significant achievements for sustainability. Among the most charming sight this season is the phenomenon known locally as "saru dango," where Japanese macaques huddle together for warmth, resembling dumplings. This warm-hearted image is being showcased at the Mishiro Town Zoo, where roughly 300 monkeys enjoy the cold months freely, delighting visitors.

Every year, as the temperature drops, groups of these monkeys form clusters, seeking warmth and comfort from one another. This spectacle has become emblematic of winter on the island. "It's amusing to see them look as cold as us, huddled together like little dumplings," chuckled one tourist, marveling at the monkeys' social behavior. The "saru dango" scenes are expected to continue until early March, making it a must-see for visitors to Shodoshima.

Shodoshima is not only known for its charming wildlife but is also receiving accolades on the international stage for its sustainable tourism efforts. Recently, it was awarded the Silver Award at the Green Destinations Awards this September. This initiative promotes sustainable tourism practices worldwide and emphasizes conserving local culture and nature.

Local officials are optimistic about the recognition, stating, "Shodoshima aims to be a sustainable island nurtured by tourism," as quoted by CSR48. Plans are underway to preserve local cultural heritages and resources, fostering economic sustainability through tourism and community engagement. The island actively promotes its rich cultural assets as treasures for tourism, with events and programs encouraging visitors to explore the area sustainably.

One notable initiative involves accessible beach events making it possible for people with disabilities to enjoy bathing surrounded by nature. This aligns with the island's goal of becoming inclusive and accommodating for all, ensuring everyone can experience its beauty.

Concurrently, Shodoshima Healthy Land Co., Ltd. continues its mission to tackle pet welfare. Recently, the company initiated programs aimed at zero euthanasia of dogs and cats, which is notable for Japan, where pet culture is booming. Sales from their pet product line, including the newly launched "Shodoshima Olive Oral Chew for Dogs," contribute to donations supporting local animal welfare organizations.

Katsunori Seto, the head of Shodoshima Healthy Land, commented on their commitment, "We hope to expand our initiatives as far as zero euthanasia for pets is concerned," underlining the importance of responsible pet ownership and welfare education within the community. The company has made substantial contributions to local animal shelters, showcasing their dedication to improving the lives of animals.

The intertwining of wildlife experiences, sustainability, and community welfare plans creates a vibrant atmosphere on Shodoshima Island. With winter enveloping the island, it concurrently sets the stage for environmental consciousness and delightful nature experiences. Visitors leave with memories enriched by both the beautiful landscapes and the engaging stories of animals, reinforced by community commitment toward sustainable practices.

The winter not only showcases the natural beauty of Shodoshima's wildlife but emphasizes the residents' efforts to cultivate sustainability and wildlife awareness. Monkeys gathered closely for warmth, the sound of laughter from tourists, and the vibrant recognition of efforts to preserve culture and environment make Shodoshima Island more than just a winter destination; it is transforming to sustain through changing seasons.
