Shiromani Akali Dal Intensifies Protests Against Punjab Government

SAD leaders demand justice for political prisoners and press freedom amid rising tensions with SGPC.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has recently intensified its protest actions, voicing strong criticisms against various policies of the Punjab government. Key leaders, including SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal, have expressed their concerns over the government’s repression of independent voices, which they argue poses a serious threat to democracy.

One of the most controversial decisions came from the Punjab Vidhan Sabha, where independent news channels were barred from entering the Assembly. Badal labeled this action as "a blatant attempt to muzzle independent voices which is not good for a healthy democracy," highlighting how such decisions undermine the core principles of freedom of the press.

Badal, who recently spearheaded a petition campaign for the release of Sikh political prisoners, emphasized the plight of inmates serving lengthy sentences. He stated, "Every prisoner sentenced to life must be treated equally under the law." His call for justice aims not only at those currently incarcerated but also aims to ignite public support from across Punjab’s villages, encouraging citizens to join this grassroots movement.

Citing the urgent need for collective action, Badal urged all Punjabis, regardless of political affiliation, to participate actively. "This is not merely about party politics; it is about the civil liberties and rights of our fellow Sikh brothers and sisters who have been unjustly detained," he asserted passionately.

On December 2, 2025, Badal's demands gained significant attention, as he announced plans to collaborate with the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) to push the campaign forward. The committee aims to mobilize community support and effectively communicate the importance of this cause to the broader public.

Meanwhile, tensions between the SAD leadership and Akal Takht Sahib surfaced when Jathedar Raghbir Singh publicly criticized the party, stating, "The community must understand the Akali Dal's leadership is pursuing confrontational policies against Sri Akal Takht Sahib." His remarks reflect the intense scrutiny within Sikh leadership and the divergent paths some factions of the community are taking.

Adding to the issues at hand, Iman Singh Mann, SAD’s Working President, raised significant environmental concerns. During his recent meeting with SGPC officials, he addressed the alarming pollution around Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib. Mann stressed the need for proactive measures to preserve the environment surrounding this sacred site, which is caused by burning waste close to the shrine. "We demand arrangements to protect the sanctity of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib from pollution," he stated firmly.

These developments indicate not only dissatisfaction with the Punjab government but also raise questions about internal leadership dynamics within the Akali Dal and the community's broader activism. The SAD's current actions reflect growing frustrations over perceived government ineptitudes and mismanagement, illustrating their efforts to reclaim community voices and directives.

With the charts of collective community engagement being drawn, the relationship between the SAD, SGPC, and wider public consciousness appears to be at a pivotal point. The party’s approach could redefine the future political discourse of Punjab, especially as they navigate the challenges posed by the current administration.

The protests, coupled with the call for prisoner releases and environmental safeguards, have become the rallying points for many across the state, as SAD encourages participation at all levels. The hope is to galvanize public sentiment not only around immediate political issues but also to uphold the core values of the Sikh community.

Badal's fervent participation alongside numerous local leaders signifies the start of what he envisions as a movement, potentially revolutionizing the political fabric of Punjab. The urgency and vigor behind the SAD's protests can lead to significant changes, but for now, they reflect the community’s deep-seated yearning for justice and accountability.
