On Thursday, April 24, 2025, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar announced that work will soon commence on the long-awaited expansion of the Shillong Airport in Umroi. This significant development comes as part of a broader initiative to enhance air travel capabilities in the region.
"The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has issued a tender notice and work will start very soon. We are hopeful that by the end of 2026, big aircraft will be landing at the Shillong airport," Dhar told reporters during a press briefing.
The expansion project is set to include a 571-meter extension of the existing runway, which will increase its total length to 2,400 meters. This enhancement is crucial as it will facilitate the operation of larger aircraft, specifically the A-320 type, which has been a long-standing requirement for the airport.
In addition to the runway extension, the project encompasses the expansion of the terminal building and apron, along with various associated infrastructure improvements. This comprehensive approach aims to not only accommodate larger aircraft but also improve passenger experience and operational efficiency.
The estimated cost for this mega project stands at Rs 119.44 crore. The expected timeline for completion is approximately 18 months, which includes a three-month break during the monsoon season. This timeline is optimistic, reflecting the government's commitment to enhancing the airport's capabilities as part of a larger vision for regional development.
Dhar expressed confidence in the project, stating, "We believe that this expansion will significantly boost connectivity and promote tourism in the region, ultimately contributing to the local economy." The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized the importance of improved air travel options for the people of Meghalaya, highlighting that the expansion will allow for more efficient transport of goods and services.
Local stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, seeing it as a vital step toward modernizing the airport and making it more competitive. As the state continues to grow, the need for improved infrastructure has become increasingly evident. The expansion of Shillong Airport is expected to play a pivotal role in meeting these demands.
This development aligns with broader national efforts to upgrade regional airports across India, enhancing air connectivity and accessibility. As the government pushes for infrastructural improvements, the Shillong Airport expansion serves as a model for similar projects in other regions.
With the tender process underway, the AAI is expected to select a contractor soon, allowing work to commence without delay. The urgency of this project reflects the growing recognition of the importance of reliable air travel in supporting economic growth and development.
As the project unfolds, the government plans to keep the public informed about progress and any potential challenges that may arise during construction. Stakeholders are optimistic that the expansion will be completed on schedule, paving the way for a new era of air travel in Meghalaya.
In conclusion, the expansion of Shillong Airport is a significant milestone for the region, promising to enhance connectivity, support economic growth, and improve overall travel experiences for residents and visitors alike. With the expected completion by the end of 2026, the project marks a hopeful future for air travel in Meghalaya.
