The 97th Selected High School Baseball Tournament is officially underway, with Shiga Koka, a newcomer to the tournament, set to face Tsuruga Kehi, a seasoned contender, in an exciting matchup on March 19, 2025, at Koshien Stadium. This first game of the second day promises to showcase some of the best young athletic talents in high school baseball.
During a pre-game interview, the coaches of both teams shared their insights and expectations for the match. Kiyoshi Takagi, head coach of Shiga Koka, expressed confidence in his team's ability despite the challenges. He described Tsuruga Kehi as a team with high baseball aptitude and strong batting capabilities. “They exhibit excellent baseball sense and have a reputation for their powerful hits,” he remarked. On the other hand, Tsuruga Kehi's coach Tetsuhira Higashi emphasized the defensive skills of Shiga Koka, particularly noting the prowess of their starting pitcher. “Their pitcher, Takumu Sakamoto, leads a solid defense, and they have a very organized team overall,” Higashi pointed out.
As both teams prepare to take the field, the focus will be on key players who could influence the outcome of the match. Coach Takagi highlighted Sakamoto as crucial for their strategy. “His performance on the mound will be key in how well we compete,” he stated, indicating that the game plan involves relying on their pitcher to set the tone. Meanwhile, Higashi aims to leverage his team’s resilience. “We want to show our ability to keep fighting throughout the game and aim to score at least one more run than our opponents,” he shared, echoing a common theme of determination displayed by both sides.
Since the introduction of new low-rebound bats this season, adjustments have been essential. Both coaches have noted a shift in how teams must approach the game. Coach Takagi mentioned that the team has focused on timing and ball-handling techniques during practice to adapt to the changes. “We’ve worked hard to make those adjustments and now we want to execute them effectively in the game,” he stated. Higashi acknowledged the complications brought by the bats, stating, “The reduction in long hits has definitely changed the game dynamics. Every team is adapting, focusing more on speed, bunting, and smart base running.”
Excitement is high for both teams as they prepare for their first appearance at Koshien. For Shiga Koka, this is especially momentous, with Takagi expressing, “This is the first time for both the coaches and players at Koshien, and we are eager to play with all our might and give our best performance.” On the opposite end, Higashi commented on his team’s readiness. “Our goal is to prepare thoroughly and come out strong to secure our first game victory and use that momentum to carry us forward,” he noted.
